Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 12/16

It’s beginning to look a lot like …winter and Christmas. Variable amounts of snow from about 4" in the Watersmeet area –8" here on the far western end, to up to a foot in th high country by Lake Gogebic. The ground still needs to firm up it is still really wet. On the upside temps will be in the 20’s for the next couple of days which will begin to help alleviate the wetness problem. Both the Gogebic Range Trail Authority and the Lake Gogebic Groomers are out panking –or rolling the trails today getting them ready for riding. Watersmeet will let us know when they can get out.

We do have snow in the forecast for the next couple of days. Be patient just a tad longer… Remeber it is early season riding with wet spots, so use caution.

You can take a look at web cams throughout the area to check out the conditions for yourself. Find links on our website at westernup.info.

Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – Evert’s Snowmobile Rentals – 12/15

This is the Keweenaw trail system report for Thursday, December 15, 2011.

The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are officially open, but more snow and colder temperatures are needed to groom. Conditions are poor. Any trail usage should be done with extreme care until we have better snow cover as there are rocks, stumps, branches and wet areas not yet covered by snow and hazards that have not been identified.

There is logging on a short portion of Trails 120, 132 and 133.

The protective mat on the Portage Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock will not be installed until the middle of December. Please drive carefully on the metal grating until the mat is installed…..do NOT use the ice.

Please be aware that if you snowmobile on U.S. Coast Guard property you could face federal trespass charges.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.

Snowfall Report:
Houghton county – 6 inches on the ground, 51 inches fallen to date
Keweenaw county –11 inches on the ground, 37 inches fallen to date
