Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 12/23

We had gotten alittle bit of snow yesterday…variable amounts from 1" to 3" but every little bit helps at this point. We have snow in the forecast for today and tonight with low temps in the teens. This will help to firm up our wet spots.

GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY Reports the groomers will not go out until we receive more snow. Trails 2&8 were groomed- conditions are poor to fair. Do expect rocks and wet areas. Trails 11N, 11S and 160 are not being groomed at this time. We need more snow and colder weather to firm up the wet spots. Hang in there!!!!

GOGEBIC AREA GROOMERS Lake Gogebic groomers report all trails are groomed conditions are fair. Do expect some brown spot for the snow is thin…but all the wet spots are pretty well froze. The trails are signed, brushed and just waiting for more snow.

U.P.THUNDER RIDERS OF WATERSMEET will not go out until we get more snow.

Remeber it is early season riding with some wet spots, so use caution. As always have a happy and safe holiday!!!

You can take a look at web cams throughout the area to check out the conditions for yourself. Find links on our website at westernup.info.

Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 12/23

This is the Keweenaw trail system report for Thursday, December 23, 2011.

The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open and groomers are out working on them. Conditions are poor to fair. Any trail usage should be done with care until we have better snow cover as there may still be areas that have rocks, stumps or branches not yet covered by snow. Remember to watch out for the groomers when you’re out on the trails….they have the right of way!!!

There is logging on a short portion of Trails 132 and 133.

The protective mat on the Portage Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock is down.

Please be aware that if you snowmobile on U.S. Coast Guard property you could face federal trespass charges.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.

Snowfall & Weather Report:

Houghton county – 8 inches on the ground, 57 inches fallen to date
Keweenaw county –7 inches on the ground, 42 inches fallen to date
