Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 12/26

The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are officially open, but more snow is needed to groom. Some panning has been done on part of the trails system. As soon as conditions improve the Keweenaw Trails Services will turn loose its fleet of groomers to get the trails in shape. Early season conditions.

Any trail usage should be done with extreme care until we have better snow coverage as there are rocks, stumps, branches and wet areas not covered by snow and hazards that have not been identified.

The protective mat on the Portage Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock has not been installed, so please drive carefully on the metal grating until the mat is installed…do NOT use the ice.

Remember to watch out for the groomers when your’re out on the trails…..they have the right away!!

Please be aware that if you snowmobile on U.S. Coast Guard property you could face federal trespass charges.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.

Houghton County has 4.5 inches on the ground with 35 inches this season to date. (12/23/12)
Keweenaw County has 5 inches on the ground with 42.5 inches this season to date. (12/26/12)

Traverse City Trail Report – Blue Sky Snowmobile Rentals – 12/24

Trails are open, partially groomed and cleaned up from the storm. We had some renters today that did the Boardman loop. They said the trails were pretty good.

A bit bumpy in spots and some snirty areas. We expect the groomers will be out again and continue on through the week. The snow is starting to harden and should make for a great base when the groomer hits it again. The short term forecast notes that we could get from 5-12 inches of snow over the next week. We have gotten about an inch since 3pm and it is currently snowing. We still have single and 2 person snowmobiles available through New years at both our Traverse City and Shanty Creek locations.

Have a safe and Merry Christmas, I will update again on the 26th.
