The latest storm delivered a little more than 5 inches in the snowbelt according to a weather spotter, less here in town as is typical of lake effect.
The weatherman says we could see another 1 to 3 today and they are calling for snow off and on the rest of the week. I drove to some of the trail heads yesterday and the base appears to have held up in some spots so this snow will definitely help us get back in business. We’ll pretty much have to start over on the town trail and the southern most parts of the trail system which were hardest hit by the thaw. For now, I would suggest you trailer out to the trail heads if you plan on riding this week.

The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open and the groomers are back out working on the trails. Trail conditions are improving however there are a few slick spots making it hard to go uphill.
Any trail usage should be done with extreme care until we have better snow cover as there are rocks, stumps, branches and wet areas not covered by snow and hazards that have not been identified.
The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.
Remember to watch out for the groomers when you’re out on the trails…..they have the right of way!!
Please be aware that if you snowmobile on U.S. Coast Guard property you could face federal trespass charges.
