Newberry Trail Report – Halfway Lake Resort – 01/31

Hey gang – For those of you wondering how much we lost during the warm up: our snow gauge (in an open field off of the lake) went from 18″ to 14″ and then started climbing again. How much snow did we get? Well, the snow gauge is back up to 24″ this morning. Yesterday’s snow was heavy stuff but it has now turned to light fluffy lake effect. The warm up combined with these cold temps is going to contribute to an awesome base!

Guests who rode yesterday said that some of the trails were great. They reported #9 to be good and trail #8 to Grand Marais as fair/poor due to the bumps- it needs to be groomed. TASA reports trail #9 was groomed last night. Grand Marais and Paradise have not yet reported.

There was a lot of blowing last night, so watch out for drifts and icy areas. Please ride safe. We are receiving multiple complaints of a hole on trail #45- about 15 miles North of Nby near Skyline Rd. Reports of multiple crashes due to a bridge/ditch (?) on a straight away that is not obvious until you are too close. Dave (Fishweb) reports flying 6′ into the air and 30′ forward going 35mph.

We have asked our guests to update us on conditions when they return. We will update you when we are able. If you have been out riding and you are able to email us an update, that would be appreciated. Please understand we are unable to reply to emails regarding trail conditions/updates. We will do our best to compile this info and post.

We are located 12 mi NW of Newberry and 7 miles S of Pinestump Junction. Between Grand Marais and Paradise.

Thank you for your phone calls. We are full through Saturday night with an opening Sun-Tues 2/3, 2/4 and 2/5. Full again through 2/9.

Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 01/31

Greetings Sledders,

Had to wait for something to happen weather wise before posting this.

Finally changed over to snow sometime last night and as of this morning we have 3-4" of fluffy Lake Effect on the ground with predictions of 4" today and 7" tonight. Two things to keep in mind about this news, one is that it is based on predictions regarding LE and two it is fluffy and doesn’t bare much in the way of cushion between you and what’s left of the base.

Base is the next issue. Took a couple of road trips yesterday to check out the crossings and saw a mixed bag of conditions ranging from short bare spots to slushy stretches and numerous water holes. The bare spots will heal provided we get what is forecast. The wet areas and holes will take some time even as temps continue to drop.

If we get the snow predicted I would rate the trails at no better than fair due to the base issues but things should continue to improve as time goes on.

Ride Often and Please Be Safe,
Keith, Sandy and The Girls

At Fay’s Motel enjoy direct access to the Grayling Area snowmobile trails.
