Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 03/09

It’s not looking any better, it 50 degrees at 1 p.m. here in downtown Frederic. Just had a couple stop by on their way back from St Ignace, they said riding really was good for the past three days and got in about 300 miles, rexton, trout lake, strongs, and up to the falls too. They said trail traffic was slow but that worked out great for them.

The Frederic neighborhood on the other hand is not to hot. Pics below I took when I got here just a little bit ago. The one is of trail 7 to the west just north of the high school where it crosses old 27…….doesnt look to promising. Our only hope is a nice big storm and cooler temps, and when we do get it you will have to be on it with in a few hours to be able to enjoy it.

That’s it on sledding, now for my helpful passport tip of the year. Before you travel off be sure to check your expiration date on your passport. I decided to run away on saturday because the snow here was junk. My friend had called and asked if I wanted to go to Costa Rica, so of course I said yes, flew to chicago and got on the flite to San Jose, Costa Rica, they scanned my passport in Chicago and said I was all set. Got to customs after the flite and then found out it expired on March 3….and it was March 7. So after wonderining if I was going to jail or not in a foreign country 2 hours later I was on a flite back to Houston, kind of like Gilligan for a 2 hour tour of the airport…….I got home about 1 this morning and have already been to Walgreens for new passport photo…….All the pics I took in Costa are below……Thanks for checking in and Think Snow…..Pete

Newberry Trail Report – 03/09

NEWBERRY AREA UPDATE via TASA Tahquamenon Area Snowmobile Association – 3/9

March 9, 2020 10:00am

Update: We did not groom last night. The temperatures are too warm. We will NOT groom again until the temperatures are below 35. Our next best shot is tomorrow night and then again on Friday. It looks like we might dodge the rain tonight and it could be a mix of freezing rain or not more than 1/2 of light snow. The staging area in town is mud and the sides of the road out of town and in town are bare. What is left on the side of the road are ice moguls. The snow depth in the woods is still good. Overall deeper in the system the trails are still pretty good, but they are late season conditions. March 31st is not far off when the trails will close that cross private property and the gates will close unless additional permissions from the land owner is granted. County roads and state lands and portions of the trail would still be accessible as long as the snow holds out. We Take Pride in Your Ride!

We will see how the next three days play out. We will keep you posted on our ability to groom going forward as early as we can in the morning or update our status late at night. There is still a lot of snow deep in the woods, however some areas are just more worn done than others, just depends on where the sun is hitting.

There is a staging area north of town at Silver Creek 3 miles north if you want to avoid the side of the road out of town. Go north after crossing the tracks and take a left at the Silver Creek ORV sign and go to the dead end and start out from there on Trail 9. Plenty of room there!

On behalf of all the businesses in the U.P. we would like to thank you for your support for visiting the area and enjoying the best of the U.P!

The Northstore Hours have changed on Cnty Rd 407 is open now Sunday to Wed. from 9am to 9pm and Thurs to Sat. 9am to 11pm. Gas, Snacks and general information. Sled Rentals Available!

The Wolf Inn is open 7 days a week 11am-10pm. Food. Closing for the winter season March 29th.

The Pine Stump is open 7 days a week now Mon.-Sun. 11am to 10pm for the kitchen.

Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub is open.

Trail #9/2/473 (Fair to Good) (South of Newberry) We will not groom again at the earliest tomorrow, but it could be as late as Thursday. As it warms up on today the portion of the trail that had a water issue earlier will almost certainly open back up. This is about 3 miles South once you cross M-28. The caution and stop ahead signs are still posted surrounding the affected area.
Trail #45 (Fair to Good) There is one area of interest. It is from Skyline Road for 3 miles that is plowed due to logging. Please use caution when going through this area. It is starting to get a little rough through there with the warm up. We will not groom again at the earliest tomorrow, but it could be as late as Thursday.
Trail #9 (Fair to Good) One of the most traveled trails. We will not groom again at the earliest tomorrow, but it could be as late as Thursday.
Trial #498 off of Trail 9 (Fair to Good) NE over to the Northstore for gas. We will not groom again at the earliest tomorrow, but it could be as late as Thursday
