Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 02/18

After a few days of unseasonable warm weather temps are back to normal and snow is in the forecast. We will see what the weekend brings us…,

GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY – Groomers are out today but overall conditions are poor to fair and extremely icy. You’ll likely run into a number of poor areas as you will encounter bare spots. Streets, Highways and parking lots are bare.

Lake Gogebic Area – Grooming is still haulted. Northern trails conditions are overall fair but icy…however you will run into a number of poor areas and encounter bare spots. Streets, Highways and parking lots are bare. Trails south of the lake are in poor conditions due expect bare spots…

Watersmeet Area – Conditions are poor. Fair out in the woods. Again grooming has stopped and will not resume until weather permitting.

IN ALL AREAS:
Please stop at stop signs.. we’re starting to get some complaints people are not stopping at the stop signs so let’s make sure we stop before someone gets hurt…

ABOUT THE ICE:
There is no such thing as "safe ice". If you choose to ride on a body of water, be sure you check with locals in the specific area you intend to ride and get current information on conditions in that area. When you ride on ice, you are doing so at your own risk.

Our 800# is still down so when calling you will not get a recording. Check back for updates and check out our webcams around the area at westernup.info ….

PHOTO REQUEST from us. If you have any neat snomo pictures you’re willing to share,we’re looking for a cover shot for next years map and other marketing uses. Can’t pay but will give a photo credit on inside of map. Send in jpg-300dpi-to bigsnow@westernup.info. Be aware anything you send will become the property of the WUPCVB so this request is more for amateur photographers…in other words, don’t send anything you may want to sell in the future. We appreciate any help on this.

Drummond Island Trail Report – Drummond Island Snow Report – 02/18

SNOWMOBILING FANS:
Updated: 2/18/2011

Base: thin at best

Snowfall Past 24 hours: 0 inches

Last Grooming: 2/4/2011

Current Trail Conditions: POOR!

Groomers Report:
The recent warm weather coupled with rain has erased any hopes of getting back out on the trails this season. All trails are down to dirt.

INTERNATIONAL ICE BRIDGE TO CANADA: The Ice Bridge is OPEN. Do ride with caution! As the warmer weather continues the ice will start to spring shifting/thawing. Check with the locals before crossing.

Customs officials are manning the Island offices and have posted regular hours. Before you cross make sure you have the appropriate ID paperwork.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING FANS: All trails are in poor condition.

SNOWSHOEING FANS: Snowshoes are no longer necessary to navigate this network of trails. A study pair of waterproof boots will let you get out and about just fine.
