Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 01/27

Our Big Snow Country Official Season Snowfall to date is 102" with 14" on the ground. Today will be mild with temps in the 30’s. Lower overnight temps which will keep the trails in good shape. Our weekend temps will be in the 20’s on Saturday and in the teens on Sunday with a chance of snow through Wednesday.

GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY Reports grooming is ongoing. Overall trails are in good condition. 11N was groomed on Thursday and is in good condition. There is one water spot on 11N which you can get around. Signs are posted so use caution. Also on trails 11N and 160 closer to the lake the snow is marginal. LOGGING IS PLANNED OFF SOUTH BOUNDARY ROAD SO WATCH FOR SIGNS AND PLOWED AREAS. 11S is in good condition and again logging is planned closer to the Wisconsin boarder so watch for signs and use caution. Please remember the logging trucks have the right of way so when and if you see them please pull over….

LAKE GOGEBIC AREA GROOMERS report all trails are being groomed daily and are in good to condition. Trails are best early in the day due to the heavy traffic. Keep in mind corners may be icy so use caution.

U.P.THUNDER RIDERS OF WATERSMEET report all trails are being groomed daily,trails overall are in good condition. Do expect some fair conditions.

Keep in mind the groomers will be out day and night, so watch for them,and PLEASE pull over or at least slow down and wait for the operator to signal you by whenever you see them. Please use caution on corners in all areas they may be icy…

ABOUT THE ICE:
It’s time for our usual caution. There is no such thing as "safe ice" due to underwater currents. If you choose to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for specific information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk.

Here are a few gas station updates. The gas station in Paulding is closed so plan ahead for filling up. On the up side the gas station in Marenisco is now open.

On February 4th there will be a snowmobile radar run on Lake Gogebic in front of the Gogebic Lodge. There will be a 1000 foot plowed track, stock and modified classes(trophies). Bikini run – 3pm all contestants on 2012 Ski Doo 600 – money and trophy. 8am to 4pm. Cost is $25.00 which includes 4 runs and a T Shirt. Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 01/27

Blue skies and sunshine on the Keweenaw this morning! What a lovely calm before the storm…."Lake effect snow watch in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning."

This is the Keweenaw trail system report for Friday, January 27, 2012.

The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open and groomers are out working on them. Trails are in good to very good condition. Remember to watch out for the groomers when you’re out on the trails….they have the right of way!!! Please watch out for deer on the trails too.

Please be aware that if you snowmobile on U.S. Coast Guard property you could face federal trespass charges.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.
