St. Ignace Trail Report – Straits Area Snowmobile Club – 01/05

Status quo around here. We got about 1″ of new snow last night, and things are holding steady. Cold Icy, and thin, but rideable. Top it off with 6″ of system snow and you can change ‘fair’ to ‘excellent’ in 12 hours. Nothing new to groom out there, and with the ice base, and little snow, not much of a reason to groom right now out of Iggy – it is thin, but ridable. I have only seen a total of 3 out of town sleds by my office, so not much traffic on the lower loop.

Ken will be running the North section Cut River to Rexton & Trout Lake Friday night, and depending on snow conditions, we will let that sit after that if it isn’t needed.

There are no major hazards to report anywhere on our 101 miles. They are plowing Cast Rock & Round Lake roads, the Southeast couple miles of Trail #471. It is passable, very thin snow, and icy. It isn’t the all-time favorite trail that we know and love, but you can ride it out of town.

Keep the snow dance up – we can use it. If you are OK with smooth trails, thin conditions, with an ice base and want to be almost by yourself, then head on UP. Otherwise, I will let you know when we get that magic 6″ base, and are in super-highway status.

Remember the Bent Ski Classic returns on February 11th. Mark your calendar, get your reservations, and plan a fun day on the Straits Trails!

Indian River Trail Report – 01/05

Finally–a trail report of great riding conditions!

The bulk of our new snow fell this morning in a burst between 6-8 am. Some areas on our trails got 3″ while others just west and south got 6″ plus.

The snow is plentiful although it’s fluffy.

Today’s riding should be beautiful out there. The groomer ran on the railroad grade and reports a 1-2″ ice base north of Indian River which was flat. The railroad grade south of Indian River has plenty of snow and more of a 3-4″ base.

The snow only increases as you travel toward Wolverine and Vanderbilt. The temperatures dropped from around 24 to 15 yesterday and wind caused drifting. It’s even colder today; only about 12 right now. The snow has let up for the moment but more lake-effect bands are on the horizon.

The Winter Weather Advisory has been extended through tomorrow afternoon at 4 pm. Today’s accumulations could be another 3-6 inches. When it’s snowing visibility is an issue and the roads are completely snow-covered. Local schools are closed and there’ve been vehicle accidents reported nearby. Ride carefully, especially at road crossings where banks can get high and vehicles can’t see snowmobiles. Use hand signals on the trails and keep your speed in mind. We want you to have fun but to make it back safely. Our volunteers will be out grooming again tonight so look for the latest in trail conditions tomorrow morning!

If you’re interested in supporting local grooming efforts, visit www.justgroomit.org or stop by Burt Lake Marina for details on joining the Indian River Snowmobile Grooming club with a membership donation. We have hats and t-shirts (short & long sleeve) for sale too. Even when we can’t groom we still have operational expenses like insurance, two-way radio communication subscriptions, equipment repair, utilities and more. Thanks to member donations we’re almost done with interior/finish construction at our new equipment barn! We now store and work on the grooming equipment only yards from the DNR trailhead. Your support makes all the difference. Thank you!
