Jordan Valley Area Trail Report – 02/04

JORDAN VALLEY AREA UPDATE via Jordan Valley Trails Council >> 02/04

Another great day in the grooming world today! Thank you to Cecil for freezing his backside off all day changing a coolant line he unfortunately discovered at midnight last night that was purging fluid as he was grooming. Mike showed up for moral support and they were able to get it off and find a suitable replacement to get it back on the trail quickly. After getting a report of a tree down, Archie was able to get right out there and take care of the hazard up by the EJ clubhouse, thanks Archie! Thank you to our DNR contact Tom, he was able to deliver our downed tractor back to the snowmobile club today, it will make it much better for putting the new track on when it shows up.

Trails are shaping up very nice as of late! We’ve received some dense snow lately that has mixed well with the fluffy lake effect that’s fell on us all year. Hats off to our volunteers who have adjusted schedules and groomed as needed to ensure all our trails are getting groomed, while we are down 1 unit and at one point down 2 units, we couldn’t do it without you guys and gals! We’ll continue to groom all week building up for what will be another busy weekend. With our area being the best conditions in the NLP, traffic has been exceptionally high the last month. Thank you riders for bearing with us on trail conditions, everyone is all hands on deck trying to keep up everyday of the week.

Get out and enjoy the great trails of the state, have a safe and enjoyable ride!

WEATHER UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> ~(Updated) Snowfall Forecast Sunrise Sunday-Sunrise Tuesday~
A major winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall to portions of the region. Most of the accumulating snow will be along and north of I-80. No matter how much snow will fall, there will be strong northwest winds that will create blowing and drifting snow. Travel north of I-80 will be near impossible at times. Some road closures are possible along and north of I-90 given greater accumulation and more persistent blizzard-like conditions. Heaviest snowfall totals through sunrise Tuesday (there will be more after) will be along Lake Superior. Snowfall rates could exceed 2" an hour at times due to lake enhancement. Expect over a foot in most areas along the lakeshore before dropping as you get closer to the WI border. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey~OUTDATED~

Sault Ste. Marie Area Trail Report – 02/04

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 02/04

2/4/25
Good morning everyone! Steve sent me a detailed report of his run last night, so let’s get to it!

“Last night was another group effort on the run from the Soo to Kinross on Trail 49.

Groomer Nathan started early and groomed from the club barn to the substation just south of 3 Mile Rd. I took over from there and headed south.

I struggled a bit early trying to carry the right amount of snow with me. I just couldn’t get a good feel for it. Made it to Kinross and turned around for the return trip.

Immediately, I realized the drag was digging in deeper than I like. I made lots of adjustments but I could not correct it. I stopped and called Groomer Dennis to see if he had any suggestions. He had me look over the drag but didn’t see anything obvious.

I proceeded on and went another couple hundred yards and stopped again. The left rear corner of the drag was digging in and leaving a depression in the center of the trail. I wasn’t able to cover my tracks and was really disappointed with the finished product.

I then called Groomer Mike and he had me check a whole list of things he could think of that might be causing it. After laying in the snow looking underneath the drag, I was getting very wet and cold. I could not find anything out of place.

I proceeded on and did the best I could. Dennis met me earlier than normal and took over the route to eliminate me from the equation. He had the same issue but maybe not to level I was seeing.

Overall, the trail is in great shape. I knocked down a lot of bumps and drifts and leveled the best I could. Unfortunately, there is a clear step between both passes in the trail. Trail is soft so it will settle quickly with sled traffic.

We think the conditions may have played a big part in the finished product last night. Our crew will take a look at the drag today once it is thawed out and see if we have any mechanical issues. I felt like the drag had a twist in it that I could not adjust out.

Finally, I may have had an off night. I felt comfortable behind the controls but never was happy with what I was seeing in the rear-view mirrors. We didn’t leave a white ribbon last night but the trail is still almost perfect. Please get out and enjoy it while the conditions are this good.
Steve Lawson”

I too, feel that this drag is off. We are very hopeful that we will be eligible for a new drag next season, as this one has run its course. We’ve repaired it and replaced parts but it’s just not doing as good a job as it once did.

Thank you Steve and all volunteers!

A bit of snow is on the way again ahead of the weekend! ❄️❄️❄️

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/28/25 5:30 PM update
Using this to gauge our starting point for the incoming storm here in the Soo. The location for this measurement is just off of trail 8 as you head west out of the Soo, about 3 miles from downtown. Lake effect snow can and does vary widely, so we appreciate any snow reports tomorrow and on.
We can hear the ice hitting the trees and hard surfaces currently. Businesses are closing early and some are already closing for tomorrow.
It appears that it will switch to snow around 10pm tonight when temps also start to drop.
PLEASE be safe. First responders are asking people not to travel unless absolutely necessary. #soo #soo1228 #snowphotos12/28/25 5:30 PM update

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/27/25
Good evening! I just got back from a ride from the Soo to Hulbert and back and the trails are very busy, as expected.
Unfortunately, grooming is on pause for us for a couple of reasons- 1) it’s too warm for it to make any difference whatsoever 2) we need more snow (and it’s coming!)
🚨 Please take note- the Pisten Bully that stays in Raco and does the Raco/Brimley/Bay Mills areas (8 west of Brimley, 480 from the Raco gate to 8, and 889) has a leaking hydraulic seal and had to be brought into the Soo barn tonight. We are awaiting the part and anticipate that it may be down until Tuesday🚨
Trails will be a bit sloppy with the warmer temps and higher traffic.
The snow is soft and corners are icy, so please be careful. We heard of 2 accidents today, unfortunately. We are hopeful that the riders are ok❤️‍🩹
Significant lake effect snow is expected tomorrow night into Tuesday, and we’ll roll groomers out as soon as it makes sense to do so.
Please ride safe, and ride sober. There are lots of families out there and we all need to work together to ensure we can all make it back safely.
Thanks all! Snow and colder temps are on the way and we’ll keep you posted! 🙌🏼❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos #soo1227

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/27/25
Good morning!
No real significant snow in our area yesterday, though we did pick up a general 4-5” inches over much of our area.
We did have groomers out yesterday in the Raco, Bay Mills, and Brimley areas, on 8, 889, and part of 480, as well as on trail 49 from the Soo to 12 mile, and also on 49 from Devils Hill to Kinross and the 494 loop. We skipped the thin section south of 12 to preserve the new snow and let riders pack it. City trails will be done tonight if needed, as well as trail 8 from the Soo to Brimley.
I’ll be going for a ride later today and I’ll report what I see.
Significant snow is forecasted for tomorrow through Tuesday, along with high winds so that could get interesting.
Remember, we are on Groomer Tracker, subscribe today!
Ride safe! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo
