St. Ignace Trail Report – Straits Area Snowmobile Club – 01/29

2 days ago trails were in excellent shape. Everything was groomed board flat, and we were still packing from last Monday’s storm. We needed to widen the trails out some, but still in excellent shape. Today? More snow on them Yay! After yesterday’s 5in or so of snow, and 25-25 mph winds, there is certainly that were blown clean, and guaranteed places that are drifted bad.

The bad news is, honestly I am not sure if we will be running before Friday. If you watch the news, the governor declared a state of emergency with the temps and wind chill. It is barley above zero today and will be much worse tomorrow. Several of my drivers are digging out from the storm or dealing with frozen pipes. Family first here. If you didn’t know in these temps it can be dangerous if the groomer breaks down. All of the glass is wonderful to see, however if the tractor were to break down the cab goes sub zero in about 15 minutes, much faster than we could get to someone in a remote area.

So to sum up. Trails were excellent. Now they have more snow, are likely drifted. We will run the groomers as soon as the drivers get there home lives secured, and it is safe to do so. It will be back to excellent by Saturday for sure.

On a separate note, I would LOVE to heard from the 2 groups of 5/6 riders that went by the office yesterday in the height of the storm. The tails of that ride should be interesting!

Indian River Trail Report – 01/29

No sooner than last night’s Winter Storm Warning expired at 7 pm we were hit with another. This warning began at 4 am and lasts until THURSDAY at noon. Looks like we’re going to get 5-10″ of new snow (3-6″ today & 2-4″ tomorrow) plus 25-35 mph winds to blow it all around. We haven’t recovered from yesterday’s storm that dumped a good 5″ and created large drifts. Several local banks and government offices closed around noon and the roads were quiet.

The most noise we heard was from a few snowmobiles buzzing around. Even that traffic was light, though; probably due to the weekend ending and extremely cold wind chills. Our guys groomed again last night and report excellent conditions everywhere. There’s no bad riding out there today, sledheads. Your only obstacle this week will be cold and occasional reduced visibility.

Currently we’re at -6 and might reach a high of 4 degrees. Even worse will be wind chills dipping as low as -30, which means frostbite in less than 30 minutes. Be very prepared when you venture out (cell phone, water, full tank of gas, ride with a buddy). This isn’t the time to get stranded on the trail. Our local roads are snow-covered and slippery. All local schools are closed again today and emergency vehicles have their hands full with vehicle traffic. Snowbanks are even higher than previously so slow down at road crossings.
