SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 02/11
2/11/25 It’s Tuesday morning, which means we get a very detaileded report from Steve! Something I look forward to every week, so let’s get to it-
“Last night was another group effort cleaning up Trail 49 from the Soo to Kinross.
Groomer Nathan, Groomer Dennis, and myself shared driving duties to cover the five plus hour run. Passenger Chris rode along for the middle three and a half hours and assisted with some much needed guidance.
Overall, the trail was in really good shape when we started. The open areas had heavy drifting from all the new snow and the trail was unrecognizable. We decided to focus on taking down the high spots where needed and clean up the drifts and level the trail out in the open spots. We also utilized the limb masher all night long.
The longer days are certainly making the runs more enjoyable. A little daylight goes a long way in anticipating what is in front of you. Chris does a great job helping me plan ahead. Last night was a couple of firsts for us though.
We were on the power line just south of town when Chris says, "What the? What is on the trail up there?" I looked up from the mirrors and couldn’t believe what we were seeing. I slowed down and started to make a plan to share the trail and pass each other when the vehicle took off through a field. We managed to get a pic of it on the way by. It was the coolest thing we seen all winter.
A few miles south we had another first. We met a horse and buggy towing a guy on skis. He was carving a nice line and skillfully missing mailboxes along the side of road. It was pretty cool to see.
We did try to hop off the road along Mackinaw Trail and groom between driveways. Unfortunately, there is still open water in the ditches and we were a little nervous and decided to stay back down on the road.
The rest of the trip was mostly uneventful. Conditions were great for grooming and the trail was freezing almost as soon as we went over it. We saw the most sled traffic of the year too. Everyone was very courteous and gave us a chance to get stopped before getting around us. Thank you to the trail riders for this.
Thanks to the crew who had the equipment performing flawlessly. They have been putting in a lot of hours trying to stay ahead of repairs. I also want to thank the Monday night crew who help out to get this run done.
Hope to see more sled traffic out on the trails. Steve Lawson”
Thank you Steve, Nathan, Dennis, and Chris! More snow is on the way… again! Could this be the best winter ever here in the Soo? Certainly shaping up that way! ❄️❄️❄️

Thank you.” Stewart came upon Rich cutting up a tree in the trail and stopped to help him👏🏼👏🏼 Rich is 80 some years young and has been volunteering nearly as long as I’ve been alive. WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> We know you'll pass by this post for snowfall today, but here on February 12th, 2026, it's quite a reflective moment to see just how far we have come this winter. Just a couple weeks ago it was lake effect snow every single day. Today, a light band of 1-3" near Munising is all we will need to write home about. We even tossed in some humor for those not in a designated snowfall zone. A couple slick spots will pop up along M-28 near Munising, and perhaps around Petoskey if a longer lake effect band happens to form, but this is more unlikely than likely. Enjoy your rather snow-free day here in Michigan in early February. If you've read this far, comment your favorite memory of winter to this point. - Chief Meteorologist Joel Fritsma #miweather #newberry #soo #petoskey#gaylordWe know you'll pass by this post for snowfall today, but here on February 12th, 2026, it's quite a reflective moment to see just how far we have come this winter.
