Indian River Trail Report – 12/29

Winter blew in last night and it was like she never left. Temperatures dropped, the wind picked up, and the snow started early last night. The storm raged on all night and the snow has just let up a bit now. There’s been a lot of blowing and drifting so getting an accurate snowfall measurement is tough. Based on reports coming in from the immediate vicinity we’re looking at 6″ to 8″ to 10″ in and around Indian River. The snow is very dense–excellent for packing. Plow trucks are making their way around but pushing this kind of snow takes extra time. We have not run the groomer yet. The guys will check the woods and see if there’s enough to make a pass through and pack the snowfall. Remember, we need at least 8″ to pan/pack the trail for riding. The railroad grade has many bare spots due to drifting. Right now temps are around 26 and there’s a lot of humidity in the air. Skies are gray and we’re expecting more snow today, 2-4″ worth. Forecasts show temperatures staying under freezing with more snow expected every day through Friday. Our winter wonderland is here! I will update again once I get any news about grooming.

Last January we took delivery of a new grooming drag. The State approved our purchase and this drag was custom-made for us by the experts at Dubie Welding & Fabrication in Gaylord. We’re glad to support local, Michigan business with this purchase. And since this drag was for with State dollars it’s nice to know your trail permit money is coming back around. Support snowmobiling and trail development by purchasing your trail permit today! Available at snowmobile dealers and other locations around the state.

If you’re interested in supporting local grooming efforts, visit www.justgroomit.org for details on joining the Indian River Snowmobile Grooming club with a membership donation. We have hats and t-shirts (short & long sleeve) for sale too. Even when we can’t groom we still have operational expenses like insurance, two-way radio communication subscriptions, maintenance of our new grooming building and more. Thanks to member donations we’re almost done with interior/finish construction at our new equipment barn! We now store and can work on the grooming equipment only yards from the DNR trailhead. Your support makes all the difference! Thank you

Paradise Area Trail Report – 12/29

Five inches of snow overnight.

Ya know, the weather people piss me off. Winter storm WARNING they said, up to a foot of snow they said. I went to bed giddy as a school kid on Christmas eve. Got up this morning to 20 degrees and 20 mph winds and maybe 5 inches of snow. Its hard to tell cause of the wind but I can still see grass in my yard. Some storm….unless you are from Florida!!! Guess we can still keep the groomers parked……bummer.

The temps are supposed to remain cold so this snow is here to stay I guess. “They” are calling for flurries the next couple days but I don`t see any big storms coming. Doesn`t look like we`ll be ringing in the new year on our sleds out in the woods.

Keep checking back, I`ll let you know if anything good happens.

Groomer Chris
