Lake Gogebic Trail Report – 01/18

January 18th, 2016

Another 6 to 8-inches of snow over Sunday afternoon to Monday morning with some pretty brutal temperatures! But, good news for the trails – we need the severe cold and the snow to keep freezing those wet spots. Traffic was very heavy this last holiday weekend but the groomers are out on all trails with drags attached working hard to get the trails in shape. Temps will be warming into the low 20’s for most of the week but lows look to remain mostly in the teens, giving us some excellent riding weather! We have more snow in the forecast throughout the week with the most snow falling over the higher terrain areas from the north end of Lake Gogebic and into the hills north of the lake.

More snow in the forecast for tonight into tomorrow morning with additional snowfall throughout the week periodically. Temps will start rising from the subzero numbers we had over the weekend to the teens and then low 20’s thru the week.

We are still working to fill a wet area on 8 west near the county line and a wet spot on trail 1 south. We advise against riding along the highway to avoid the wet area on 8 west as many sleds have been doing. This poses a safety hazard to sleds and cars and you may be ticked by law enforcement.

That’s all for now from Carolyn at the Hoop. For additional information about the Lake Gogebic area please visit the chamber website at www.LakeGogebicArea.com or call us at 1-888-464-3242 (888-GOGEBIC).

Indian River Trail Report – 01/18

Thank you goes out to our volunteers who groomed each night this holiday weekend. Trails are smooth and snow is plentiful. Temps were in single digits by late yesterday, which helped the base settle in hard after last night’s groom. Plenty of snowmobilers have been enjoying the trails and reporting great conditions too. Our guys will be out again tonight. Areas here picked up another 2 or more inches of snow overnight. There’s no consistent snowfall measurement because of these lake-effect bands. Areas in the bands have gotten several inches while outlying areas received less (but still several inches). We’ve got the same forecast for today and the winter weather advisory continues until midnight. Predictions are for another 3-7″ and highs of only 15 degrees.

Expect traffic to be lighter today. Layer up and hit the trails if you can! Be alert and drive safe. LOST ON THE RAILROAD GRADE YESTERDAY–A SKI-DOO DASH BAG (BLACK) SOMEWHERE BETWEEN BREAKERS IN TOPINABEE AND ABOUT 10 MINUTES NORTH OF THERE. If you find this bag please email info@burtlakemarina.com and we’ll get it back to a grateful owner!
