SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/18
Update 1/18 Good evening! Looks like tomorrow we finally turn the corner on this warm, snowless spell.
Depending on what forecast you look at, anywhere from 6-12” is predicted tomorrow through Friday morning over most of our area (woo hoo!) I am also seeing colder temps and our beloved northwest winds returning on Saturday. That *might* mean the potential for lake effect snow on top of the system snow🤞
We have not had groomers out in almost 3 days due to warm temps and rain. However, there have still been riders out and they are reporting flat, but hardened trails, ice scratchers are likely needed. Any road crossings or stretches that are alongside the road such as in Brimley are just flat out no good and bare. Overheating could be an issue until we get some snow on the pavement.
The Brimley Bay IS NOT frozen, stay off of it for your safety! I’ve been in contact with some of the guys tonight, preparing a plan to head out tomorrow if we do indeed get the snow. There’s just not much to work with otherwise.
🚨🚨 Trail 49 from Alberta Lane just south of the Soo to Gaines Hwy north of Kinross remains closed. I saw the photo of the sled stuck in there and it wasn’t pretty. Poor guy. Again, it is closed for your safety!🚨🚨
We do still have a couple of water holes that I hope we can fill in with new snow and maybe they will finally start to freeze up. We can’t report on the exact status of those until we can get in there but the worst one is on 472 just east of the 480 intersection. There are also 2 small ones behind Kewadin Casino that were giving riders a little trouble last weekend.
That’s what I’ve got for now!
As always, ride safe! Please be aware of the potential for hazards and changing conditions in this wacky winter we are having.
Let it snow…. & freeze! ❄️🥶❄️🥶
Thank you Melissa and Kevin for the pics from today!

Thank you to Merle’s Towing for your communication and helping her out! 🚨 Caution!! There is a car stuck on the trail behind Kewadin Casino. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Another quickly-moving Clipper will bring a round of widespread, light snow beginning this evening, followed by lingering lake effect snow across the NW wind snow belts for Tuesday. Totals of an inch or less are expected for most of the UP, but where lake effect snow occurs, up to 2-5in of snow is possible tonight through Tuesday evening. As winds pick up early Tuesday, patchy blowing snow may contribute to reduced visibility in the NW wind snow belts.
