Lake Gogebic Trail Report – 12/15

Conditions are getting more and more favorable to help us get the trails in good riding condition. Over the past few days groomers have been out panking trails to get them frozen down before adding the drags for serious trail grooming. So far they’ve covered trails 8 West, 1 South, 13 South, 8 East and Bergland. Trail 102 is scheduled for Thursday & 13 North is scheduled for Friday. Part of 1 North has been done with the remainder scheduled for Thursday, as well.

Our head groomer driver reports that conditions are very wet and poor at this time. However, we are experiencing some blizzard-like conditions with extreme cold temps expected through Sunday along with snow each day through Sunday. All of that should help get the trails where they need to be.

With these extreme cold temps caution should be considered a high priority. Dress with lots of layers, keep your fuel topped off, try to travel with a companion or at least let others know your route and when to expect you and take along hand & foot warmers.

Gogebic Area Grooming really needs your support at this time more than ever. You can be a part of our grooming efforts with a sponsorship of $25 for single, $30 for family and $75 for businesses. However we’d greatly appreciate a donation of any amount. These can be sent to “Gogebic Area Grooming” at “115 Hoop ‘N Holler Rd / Merriweather, MI 49947” or you can find sponsorship pads at most businesses around the lake with our map boxes, where you can also deposit donations. All map money is intended to benefit the grooming efforts in our area. If you mail your sponsorship or donation to the above address be sure to include contact info, as well.

If you’re planning on being up here over Christmas day be aware that all restaurants in the area will be closed for that day.

For additional information about our area please contact The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce at 888.GOGEBIC or www.lakegogebicarea.com.
You can also email us at info@lakegogebicarea.com. Have a safe ride!

Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 12/15

Good News! All area groomers are out. Our weather is still very cold with snow on Friday and Saturday.

The Gogebic Range Trail Authority reports:
Trail 2 from the Montreal River in Ironwood to Ramsay Crossing is in good condition; active grooming is taking place daily. Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Marenisco has been panned & rolled and is in fair to poor condition. Trail improvement work on the ascent to Indianhead Mountain from Blackjack Ski Hill as well as the descent from Indianhead Mountain to Wakefield have been straightened to improve safety & easier grooming. Rock and water hole hazards exist from east of Wakefield to the start of the rail grade at Korpela Rd. Trail 8 will be panned 12/14/2016 in anticipation of fresh snowfall.

Trail 160 remains closed due to a bridge replacement across Mud Creek damaged by July 11th storm damage; however, the GRTA is seeking to open the southern half of the trail for local trail access to trail 2. The GRTA expects to reopen Trail 160 January 2017. Trail 11N & 11S remain closed for the season. The club does expect to reopen the trails 2017-2018 season, pending volunteer help to do so. Please join the GRTA today and help reopen trails as well as get trained as a groomer operator! It is time to take action to reinstate the Western U.P. as THE U.P. SNOWMOBILE TRAVEL DESTINATION!

Lake Gogebic Area Groomers: We have gotten about 12 inches of new snow and ice is starting to form on the lake. Our groomers are hoping to get out mid-week to start packing the trails.

For those of you who can’t wait another day to ride, unplowed roads and Trial 8 east are probably the best riding this early. Trails 1 south & 13 south are wet. Trial 102 & 13 north are rideable but very rough. Trail 100 at the south end of the lake, is temporarily closed while we reroute around some logging.

With all that said snowmobiling should be looking pretty good by the weekend, however there are always some hurdles to overcome early on in the season – so just don’t expect perfection just yet.

The U.P. White Thunder Riders of Watersmeet report:
Trail Condition: Poor
Last Groomed: February 04th, 2016
Base: 7″
Past 24hr: 0″
Reported On: December 14th, 2016 @ 7:39am

Groomer Report
Groomers will head out today for the first time. They will be panning/flattening and evaluating the trail conditions.
