The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are officially open, but more snow is needed to groom. Some panning has been done on part of the trail system. As soon as conditions improve the Keweenaw Trails Services will turn loose its fleet of groomers to get the trails in shape. Early season conditions.

Any trail usage should be done with extreme care until we have better snow cover as there are rocks, stumps, branches and wet areas not covered by snow and hazards that have not been identified.

The protective mat on the Portage Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock is being installed today.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.

Please be aware that if you snowmobile on U.S. Coast Guard property you could face federal trespass charges.

Snowfall & Weather Report:

Houghton county – 5 inches on the ground, 36 inches fallen to date as of 12/26/12.
Keweenaw county – 5 inches on the ground, 42.5 inches fallen to date as of 12/26/12.

With temps in the teens and snow showers in the forecast for the next few days this will help firm up the trails.

Sunrise over Sunday Lake – Dec. 23

The Gogebic Range Trail Authority reports: Trail 2 from Ironwood to Marenisco is groomed with some icy and wet spots so use caution. They are out rolling trail 160 and will roll 8 tomorrow. Trail 2 will be groomed again tomorrow. It is still early season riding we need more snow to get the trails in great shape.

The Lake Gogebic groomers are out and reporting all trails are rolled expect some wet spots and early riding conditions. More snow is needed to get the trails in great shape.

The Watersmeet groomers have not gone out yet they need more snow.

All areas need more snow….keep in mind groomers can be out day or night so watch out for them and please pull over or slow down and wait for the operator to signal you by.
