Indian River Trail Report – 01/22

The talk around here is the cold temps, windchill, and lake effect that’s predicted all week. From Sunday into Monday late morning we received a total of 5′ here. Last night we got another inch of snow. Temps were at 2 degrees overnight and aren’t much higher now. Areas a stone’s throw to our west and south are in direct fire of the lake effect. This includes areas of our wooded trail down toward Wolverine. Down by Weber Lake there’s at least 10′ of fresh snow that fell yesterday! There’s been a little drifting here but winds haven’t kicked up yet this morning. We’ve got light snow falling now and predicted accumulations today are 2 more inches. Windchill will be taking temps down to negative teens so if you ride make sure no skin is exposed. Exposed skin will quickly frostbite with our windchill. Both groomers ran last night and trails are looking smooth and white. It’s quiet around town today so get out and enjoy this outdoor playground! We’ll bring you the latest on conditions tomorrow morning.

Lake Gogebic Trail Report – Walley Lodge – 01/21

We’ve received about a foot of snow over the last few days with snow in the forecast every day this week! The groomers have been out and while the trails are in “good” condition, there are still some icy spots so use caution. Trail conditions will continue to improve as we continue to receive more snow! Sledding season is here….so get packed up and come on up! This is what you’ve been waiting for!

WARNING: Although as a rule, we never comment about riding on Lake Gogebic itself, as the DNR (the sponsor of our grant money) does not recognize trails over open water – thus there are no trail markings on the lake. However, we’re experiencing a first ever problem on the lake that we want to make sure we inform our riders about for their safety. We have reports of two large holes of open water between the Hoop ‘N Holler Tavern (at the northwest corner of the lake) and Fishtales Resort (approx. 6 miles south of the Hoop on the west shore). There are reports, also, of ice heaves on either side of these open holes. Please use caution and ride slow enough to see far ahead of you. These conditions could change rapidly so please use caution.

FYI – the Bergland Mobil has closed, so plan your fueling accordingly.
