Lake Gogebic Trail Report – 02/07

February 7th, 2014 – Well….there hasn’t been too many new trail reports this week, pretty much because the conditions just haven’t changed. It’s been sunny and very cold every day! The daytime temps have stayed mostly in the single digits and nighttime temps have been below zero. In fact, most of the UP is close to breaking a record of most consecutive days below zero. We haven’t been receiving much in the way of snow, mostly because Lake Superior has frozen completely over north of the west end of the UP. Since the clouds coming across Lake Superior can’t pick up any moisture from the lake in a frozen state we don’t get much snow. But not to fear, because it has stayed so cold we haven’t lost any of the snow we had already received (and there is plenty of it). When it does warm up the ice may break up on Lake Superior and then we’ll be back in a pattern of getting more snow. But for now, with plenty of snow on the trails and the below normal cold temperatures our groomer drivers have been keeping the Gogebic Area Grooming trails in excellent condition. No problems to report on any of our trails – so come on up and enjoy some great riding!

Once again local law enforcement has asked me to remind snowmobilers that it is against the law to ride on the railroad tracks that run through Merriweather and Bergland. In some areas the snowmobile trails do run parallel to the tracks so please look for trail signage to let you know you are riding in the right area. Law enforcement has been out patrolling these areas and will ticket anyone not using the trails.

That’s all for now from Carolyn at the Hoop. I will keep you posted as often as conditions change. For additional information about the Lake Gogebic area we invite you to visit the only official website of the Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce at www.LakeGogebicArea.com or call us at 1-888-464-3242 (888-GOGEBIC). From all of us here at Lake Gogebic have a great ride as well as a safe ride.
