Indian River Trail Report – 01/05

The big storm forecasted for Saturday hit just to our south. I don’t know snowfall amounts, but given that Wolverine and Vanderbilt schools are closed today I would guess they got some decent snow. Our area got 3″ of snow and we’ve had blowing and drifting too. The temperatures dropped dramatically from Saturday to Sunday–we only had single-digits yesterday. Today we’re only around 4 degrees but could make it up to 12. The radar shows lake-effect bands and light snow is falling now. We aren’t expecting large accumulations today but tomorrow’s forecast is for 3-5″ of snow. We have to have more snow before the groomers can run the equipment. By that I mean run the equipment to pan/pack the snow, which is the first step before grooming. The railroad grade is frozen gravel because sleds have been riding. The trails are in similar shape but do have a very thin coating of snow. We know people are anxious to ride, but hitting the trails before there’s enough snow for the groomer’s to pan results in no base. The snow that’s there gets blown off or chewed up. Riders who can go off-trail are encouraged to do so. Hopefully the snow keeps coming and within a couple days the guys will be out whipping the trails into shape! Stay tuned for the latest and try to be patient…

If you’re interested in supporting local grooming efforts, visit www.justgroomit.org for details on joining the Indian River Snowmobile Grooming club with a membership donation. We have hats and t-shirts (short & long sleeve) for sale too. Even when we can’t groom we still have operational expenses like insurance, two-way radio communication subscriptions, and more. Your support makes all the difference! Thank you–

Gaylord Area Trail Report – VisitGaylord.com – 01/04

Additional snow overnight, however, still waiting for enough snow to get the groomers out. Cold weather in the forecast all week. Just need some more snow along with the cold weather to the the trails in decent shape.

Sledheads of Frederic – 01/04

Its starting to look better with about a new 1 or 2 inch snowfall overnight. Its now 11:30 on sunday morning in Frederic. Right after I got here at ten a group of people came in and said they rode 200 miles around here in the past couple of days. That has to be a tough ride as the first group I had in here yesterday rode trail 7 up from lake margrethe and wanted me to give them a ride back home. Groomers are still a long ways off from going out and I took a look behind Fays Motel this morning and there the groomers sat snow covered and looking like they wish they could get out on the trails. So slowly and inch by inch we should be able to start building a base. At one time yesterday I did count 18 sleds over at the swamp. I don’t think there were more than 5 or 6 sleds that rode into my lot here yesterday. I even had a visit from the ever elusive Mountain Man. I told him how I saw his story that was on the Huffington Post. He said that the camera crew flew here from California to do that interview with him. Even one of the Alabama boys told me they heard it on the radio down in Alabama and speaking of the boys from L.A. (lower Alabama) I know they are chomping at the bit to get up here and ride too. Hopefully soon. Here is a link to quick video I shot out front yesterday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DnXUegtu_Q Thanks for checking in. Pete
