Indian River Trail Report – 02/03

No change to report from yesterday. We did not groom last night because conditions are unchanged. Grooming over top of thin base without fresh snow can do more damage than good. We need to preserve our fair-to-good conditions until we get some more snow. That said, there’s no traffic out and riding in the woods is good. Temperatures are at least 10 degrees warmer than they were yesterday at this time. UPDATE–We just had a customer stop by and report trails are in much better shape than he expected. He rode 45+ miles last night on both the railroad grade and through the woods. He said you’ll see a little snirt once in a while but overall he was amazed at how smooth the trails were. Again, even though the base is thin the groomers have worked it all along and this results in smooth riding. The frigid cold has really helped us too. There’s a little bit of sunshine out there and we got a dusting of snow overnight. Up toward Cheboygan reports are an inch of fluff fell overnight. Radar shows we could see some light snow today too. Get out and put some miles on if you can!

Just an FYI that there’s logging activity on the east loop of our wooded trail. The area is signed but watch for changing trails conditions where the trail has been plowed for vehicle traffic. The activity stretches about 1/2 to 1 mile.

Other grooming club news is the new drag we took delivery of in January. The State approved our purchase and this drag was custom-made for us by the experts at Dubie Welding & Fabrication in Gaylord. We’re glad to support local, Michigan business with this purchase. And since this drag will be paid for with State dollars it’s nice to know your trail permit money is coming back around.

If you’re interested in supporting local grooming efforts, visit www.justgroomit.org for details on joining the Indian River Snowmobile Grooming club with a membership donation. We have hats and t-shirts (short & long sleeve) for sale too. Even when we can’t groom we still have operational expenses like insurance, two-way radio communication subscriptions, and more. Thanks to member donations we’re putting up a groomer building ,where we now store and can work on the equipment. Your support makes all the difference! Thank you–

Paradise Area Trail Report – 02/03

Woke up this morning to 12 degrees and a fresh 2 inches of snow on our deck….YES!! It is still snowing pretty good right now….YES again!!

The weather guessers are calling for a few more inches over the next couple of days. If this happens I will upgrade the trails back to excellent!! They are good now, just not excellent in my book.

Not much more to report, just trying to keep my brother ( from down below ) off my back. Waiting for him to take some time off work and come UP during the week, its worth it bro!!

Something I did want to mention and maybe teach you. Groomer lesson 101. When you come upon a groomer from either the front or rear…..take it easy. We will stop when the coast is clear and there is room to get around us. I see WAY too many people that seem to be in a hurry to get by us. If we are coming at you in a tight section of trail, just turn around, PLEASE. Don`t try to squeeze around us. I`ve had people jump on the bank of the trail and walk their sleds by us and be between the sled and the drag. This is dangerous!! If your sled tips into the drag it will pin you….duh. And then what? If you come in behind us, take it easy, especially on the fresh groom. We will stop and let you by as soon as we can. Please don`t tear around us and trench the fresh groom. Thanks for your cooperation.

LET ER SNOW!!!! Groomer Chris
