Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 01/18

FREDERIC / GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic – 01/18

20 degrees and quiet in Frederic. Sled traffic was slow all day yesterday with reports from people of not great trails and of course we have had no new snow. I shoveled snow against the sides of one of my rental houses last night. I had not been back there all winter and there was only about 4 inches of snow there. So that means everything that we have had this winter settled into that 4 inches and the ground wasnt even frozen. It supposed to be below zero the next few days and the north winds have picked up pretty good here this morning. I checked the 2 grayling hotels this morning and days inn had 6 trailers and ramada had 16. Thats the most I have seen there this winter and I hope those guys get a decent ride but its pretty sparse for snow around town. Thanks for checking in. Pete

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via 9&10 News >> Winter Storm Update: 3-15 Sunday 1PM
Phase 2 of the Winter Storm is kicking off! This will bring heavy snow and gusty winds still for the U.P. and Tip of the Mitt. The icing area we have talked about for the last few days landed where we thought it would. Leelanau down to Wexford and Northeast. These areas could see up to .5" of ice through today and tonight with isolated higher amounts. Winds will continue to gust upwards of 40-50mph. The snow totals map you see is on top of what you have already seen.
Don't be fooled, the lull from the initial burst to the second part is the system nearing. The second phase will be the worst with this storm. This afternoon - Monday morning.
I will be live with an update this evening at 6, right here on the 9&10 Facebook page and the 9&10 News YouTube channel.
We will also be live on tv at 11! #miweather #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey #soo #newberry

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Final Update For Ice Accretion:
A dangerous ice storm will begin tonight for portions of northern lower Michigan. The heaviest ice accretion takes aim in a localized area from Traverse City to Gaylord to Atlanta with over 0.50" of ice expected. Around this area, a zone of significant icing between 0.25' to 0.50" is expected - which is still enough to take down tree limbs and create power outages. The worst of the icing will be tonight into Monday morning, and then we deal with high winds moving in Monday morning as well which will only exaggerate the effects of this event.
Plan for multi day outages, near impossible travel, and scattered tree damage, some significant. #miweather #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey #soo #newberryFinal Update For Ice Accretion:

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> One of the most absurd snow forecasts we’ve ever made here at MSC, we’ve had to add an impromptu orange color for higher totals.
Key Notes:
•Snow begins to work into Michigan late tonight, but becomes more widespread during the early morning hours of Sunday. This snow continues through Tuesday morning for the UP, and becomes a snow/freezing rain/sleet mix for northern lower Michigan beginning Sunday afternoon/evening.
•Winds will gust between 40-60mph statewide both on Sunday and Monday.
•This will be a full on blizzard for much of the Upper Peninsula
•Expect scattered power outages across the state
•Travel will be near impossible for the UP and northern lower
Snow totals will be between one and four FEET when all is said and done on Tuesday in the UP. Further south, a mix is expected which will keep accumulations lower, and also will provide a sharp cutoff of accumulations. The difference between a foot of snow and 2” may be the width of one county.
Further south, this system will end as snow for lower Michigan on Monday & Tuesday, which is why we have a wide area within a trace to an inch, and western lower in a 1-3” zone with wording of higher totals possible. We may need to adjust totals here as new data comes clearer for Tuesday.
Stay tuned for the icing portion of this forecast. Northern lower Michigan will see significant icing which is not shown or communicated in this forecast graphic or write up. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskeyOne of the most absurd snow forecasts we’ve ever made here at MSC, we’ve had to add an impromptu orange color for higher totals.

We’ve seen a bit of a northward shift over the last 24 hours which has taken higher accretion amounts and shifted them. We still expect a corridor of 0.50” or more across Cheboygan, Boyne City, Gaylord, and Rogers City regions. The further south you go, the less ice accretion becomes.

Within the 0.25” and 0.50” zones, we expect multiple power outages along with scattered tree damage as a result of the weight of the ice and gusty winds combining. These outages may be multi-day outages, and those in these two zones should take necessary precautionary actions to ensure you are ready.

Outside of the heaviest ice accretion, near impossible travel should be expected due to icing and heavy snow that may blow around.

Speaking of blowing around, winds will be gusting between 40-50mph across northern lower Michigan on both Sunday and Monday. This will aide in further worsening of tree damage and power outages.

The WORST of the freezing rain occurs Sunday evening and continues into Monday morning. We expect Monday to be the worst of the event for the icing area.

Please see our previous forecast for snowfall information, and please reference our wind map set to be posted around 7:30pm which focuses on Sunday.

FREDERIC / GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic – 01/17

It’s a sunny 27 degree friday morning. Supposed to be in the 30s today but then cool down. I have seen several sleds out and about this morning. Yesterday there were the most people that have been in here in a while so I think people are going to be coming to ride regardless of the thin snow. Its supposed to cool down alot for about 5 days so maybe we will get some snow along with the cold. For those of you that like to go to Spikes Keg O Nails that is downtown Graylin on the business loop. There is construction going on which keeps you from riding your sled to Spikes to eat. There are a couple of plowed areas at the Crawford County court house that you can park your sled at and walk down Michigan Ave to the business loop and then over to Spikes. I took some pics down there this morning to help you see how to get there. The parking is right next to the sled trail by the RR tracks. Its a short walk to get a yummy Spike Burger. Thanks for checking in. Pete
