FREDERIC / GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic – 01/24 It’s a comfy 20 degrees, a perfect temp to ride. I am still surprised at the lack of sleds around, granted snow is thinner here in Frederic than west of here but there are still not many around. Usually as long as it looks white the riders will show up. I had a group of 3 guys park out back yesterday and they were just here again this morning and they said they had a great ride yesterday going north and west and they are going to do it again today. I have had several people write and ask me why they are not grooming and its an easy answer. Not enough snow but Gaylord has been out each day here to Frederic and Grayling did do trail 7 to Frederic last nite. So its a start but we still need more snow for the groomers to pull and make it a nice trail. Pretty much the same story each day. The forcast for the next week calls for scattered snow most every day with acceptable temps so lets see how that works out. I finally got my sign made for my back parking lot with payment options of Zelle, Paypal and Venmo on it. If you do come here to park when you pull in go as far as you can to the east end of the lot and either pull or back in so your rig is facing north or south. I have talked to a few people this morning that have said the highway is busy with trailers heading north so thats a bit promising. Much of the snow during this time frame will fall starting after 9 am Tuesday, and finish up by 9 am Wednesday, with light lake effect snow or freezing drizzle mixing in. Totals south of US-10 will generally be lower due to warmer temperatures at the surface. We did shift around the Upper Peninsula 4-8" snowfall forecasts to account for some lake enhancement within the system, coupled with lift from the hilly terrain. Same story for around Gaylord where totals may exceed 4". Winds within this system may gust up to 30 mph, so some reduced visibility chances are expected if you go into the Upper Peninsula primarily. Scattered travel impacts are also possible across the northern Lower Peninsula. We will likely have a last call map out right before the snow begins tomorrow morning. Still alot of slush underneath but a fair amount of riders out and about on saturday and the same this sunday morning. I pushed alot of slush around with my plow this morning as its supposed to get back down below zero. I would give riding a fair conditions right now as I have seen way worse that what we have now.. I never thought we would get back to where we are at right now after how it looked on friday. We just have to take what we get. First pic of the Wood crew in here yesterday. Here on February 21st, 2026, most of the snow and freezing rain will continue across the western UP and northwestern LP. We will see a shift to more snow into central and southern Michigan by late this evening. Then on Sunday, snow should be on-and-off across the entire state, with an uptick in typical lake effect zones such as the spine of the western UP, and the entire Lake Michigan shoreline. Lake effect bands are very finicky, and are subject to microclimate wind shifts. It's very possible that a few locations in our 1-3" zone see 4-5" by the end of the day on Sunday. We will be monitoring radar for a dominant lake effect band that stretches across the peninsula. The increase of wind on Sunday morning may also reduce visibility on all roadways to under half a mile, so travel only as fast as conditions allow.
Bottom line, plan for some more of that "annoyance" snow. Not enough to be called a big storm, but enough to cover all side roads, and many of our main roads. Accumulation will be higher during the overnight hours when surface temperatures are NOT at or above 32°F for most of the state. Tracking more snow and colder temperatures into the weekend, breezy winds early next week, and another clipper mid next week.
Winds go more NW into this weekend bringing back some colder temperatures to support more snow. Better chances for the snow Saturday into N. Lower and the Tip of the Mitt. More lake effect snow chances for Sunday.
NW winds will become breezy Sunday into Monday. We also could have another clipper system to track next Tuesday into Wednesday. As of now, looking more like another snow/mix.
