FREDERIC – GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> 01/03
I never made it on here yesterday but there were a steady stream of sleds and its now a cloudy and calm saturday morning at 24 degrees. Havent seen any sleds yet but have had a few calls. I have had several people that I have met thru the years that I havent seen in a long time. Its great to catch up with people. Steve who has a place in traverse city stopped and I rode with him up around lake leelanau years ago. Several people from pennsylvania and I want to send a shout out to Jim Wilkerson in Pennsylvania. He is another great memory from the past. A group of Indiana riders and one of them said I had inspired him to get his knees fixed after I had mine done. Another family Brian and Diedre who bought a home thru me about 20 years ago and brought their daughters in. One of them was only 2 back then and is now in college. I have seen alot of kids grow up over the years and now those little kids are bringing their own in. Thats the circle of life…….Here are some pics from yesterday and a east and west shot of the trail 7 north of the high school on old 27.Snow is holding good…..Thanks for checking in. Pete

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> One of the most absurd snow forecasts we’ve ever made here at MSC, we’ve had to add an impromptu orange color for higher totals.
Key Notes:
•Snow begins to work into Michigan late tonight, but becomes more widespread during the early morning hours of Sunday. This snow continues through Tuesday morning for the UP, and becomes a snow/freezing rain/sleet mix for northern lower Michigan beginning Sunday afternoon/evening.
•Winds will gust between 40-60mph statewide both on Sunday and Monday.
•This will be a full on blizzard for much of the Upper Peninsula
•Expect scattered power outages across the state
•Travel will be near impossible for the UP and northern lower
Snow totals will be between one and four FEET when all is said and done on Tuesday in the UP. Further south, a mix is expected which will keep accumulations lower, and also will provide a sharp cutoff of accumulations. The difference between a foot of snow and 2” may be the width of one county.
Further south, this system will end as snow for lower Michigan on Monday & Tuesday, which is why we have a wide area within a trace to an inch, and western lower in a 1-3” zone with wording of higher totals possible. We may need to adjust totals here as new data comes clearer for Tuesday.

Within the 0.25” and 0.50” zones, we expect multiple power outages along with scattered tree damage as a result of the weight of the ice and gusty winds combining. These outages may be multi-day outages, and those in these two zones should take necessary precautionary actions to ensure you are ready.
Outside of the heaviest ice accretion, near impossible travel should be expected due to icing and heavy snow that may blow around.
Speaking of blowing around, winds will be gusting between 40-50mph across northern lower Michigan on both Sunday and Monday. This will aide in further worsening of tree damage and power outages.
The WORST of the freezing rain occurs Sunday evening and continues into Monday morning. We expect Monday to be the worst of the event for the icing area.

Had a wonderful ride yesterday with Steve and Karen from Florida and did a nice 65 mile trip. We only saw one other set of tracks all day and we broke new 6 to 8 inches of snow all day. Many calls already this morning but if you arent here now to enjoy what we have it probably. wont hold up, but wait there is more as the big storm is supposed to be tonight and tommorow but the kicker on that is it could be rain too so its a crap shoot. Also Mackinaw bridge is clossed again as of 9:10 a.m and its now 10:36. I have lost count of how many times it has been closed this week so take that into consideration. You couldnt have asked for better conditions and temp yesterday but thats in the past now and the wait is on to see what mother nature brings us next. We had lunch at Lovells and while we rode there from Frederic a group of five guys rode in that had come down from Gaylord and they said that was good too. So thats where we are at for now. It’s not often that we get to show 90% probabilities of getting 1.5 feet of snow, but that will be the case for much of our region. And the potential for significant icing has started to inch more into the far eastern UP, so we’ll need to keep an eye on that as well. I’ll provide some final updates tomorrow morning before the first impacts start to roll in. Today: Snow and blowing snow move across northern MI with bursts of heavy snow falling at 1-2" per hour combined with wind gusts of 30-45+ mph likely leading to whiteouts at times, especially this morning. Snow tapers this evening into tonight.
A brief break in wintry weather anticipated Saturday.
Saturday night through Monday: A late season winter storm has its sights set on the Great Lakes region. While uncertainty still exists with regards to specific snowfall/icing amounts and the location of where these highest amounts fall, potential continues to increase for parts of northern MI to see 12-24"+ of snow while others see impactful/heavy icing. Use caution when looking at detailed forecast amounts several days in advance.
