It’s a nice 19 degrees this morning in downtown Frederic, at least it stayed a nice cold 6 degrees overnight at my house and I have already seen a few sleds this morning. Riding today should still be o.k. but hard out there and thats better than mush. Already had first rider of the day in and his pic is below with a couple other pics to show the snow is holding. Presidents weekend is usually a big weekend, I still dont like the forcast for next week but we still have lots of snow in the woods and its a long ways from gone. Thankfully it never made 32 yesterday and if the temps do reach the predicted highs it should only be for a little while in the late afternoon. Its cloudy and quiet out there and hopefully the sun stays hidden. If you do ride just be careful of icy corners. Thanks for checking in. Pete

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Along with significant snowfall, comes the chance of significant ice accretion. We’ve seen a bit of a northward shift over the last 24 hours which has taken higher accretion amounts and shifted them. We still expect a corridor of 0.50” or more across Cheboygan, Boyne City, Gaylord, and Rogers City regions. The further south you go, the less ice accretion becomes... #miweather #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskeyAlong with significant snowfall, comes the chance of significant ice accretion. We’ve seen a bit of a northward shift over the last 24 hours which has taken higher accretion amounts and shifted them. We still expect a corridor of 0.50” or more across Cheboygan, Boyne City, Gaylord, and Rogers City regions. The further south you go, the less ice accretion becomes.
Within the 0.25” and 0.50” zones, we expect multiple power outages along with scattered tree damage as a result of the weight of the ice and gusty winds combining. These outages may be multi-day outages, and those in these two zones should take necessary precautionary actions to ensure you are ready.
Outside of the heaviest ice accretion, near impossible travel should be expected due to icing and heavy snow that may blow around.
Speaking of blowing around, winds will be gusting between 40-50mph across northern lower Michigan on both Sunday and Monday. This will aide in further worsening of tree damage and power outages.
The WORST of the freezing rain occurs Sunday evening and continues into Monday morning. We expect Monday to be the worst of the event for the icing area.

Had a wonderful ride yesterday with Steve and Karen from Florida and did a nice 65 mile trip. We only saw one other set of tracks all day and we broke new 6 to 8 inches of snow all day. Many calls already this morning but if you arent here now to enjoy what we have it probably. wont hold up, but wait there is more as the big storm is supposed to be tonight and tommorow but the kicker on that is it could be rain too so its a crap shoot. Also Mackinaw bridge is clossed again as of 9:10 a.m and its now 10:36. I have lost count of how many times it has been closed this week so take that into consideration. You couldnt have asked for better conditions and temp yesterday but thats in the past now and the wait is on to see what mother nature brings us next. We had lunch at Lovells and while we rode there from Frederic a group of five guys rode in that had come down from Gaylord and they said that was good too. So thats where we are at for now. It’s not often that we get to show 90% probabilities of getting 1.5 feet of snow, but that will be the case for much of our region. And the potential for significant icing has started to inch more into the far eastern UP, so we’ll need to keep an eye on that as well. I’ll provide some final updates tomorrow morning before the first impacts start to roll in. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> Lots of wintry weather ahead!
Today: Snow and blowing snow move across northern MI with bursts of heavy snow falling at 1-2" per hour combined with wind gusts of 30-45+ mph likely leading to whiteouts at times, especially this morning. Snow tapers this evening into tonight.
A brief break in wintry weather anticipated Saturday.
Saturday night through Monday: A late season winter storm has its sights set on the Great Lakes region. While uncertainty still exists with regards to specific snowfall/icing amounts and the location of where these highest amounts fall, potential continues to increase for parts of northern MI to see 12-24"+ of snow while others see impactful/heavy icing. Use caution when looking at detailed forecast amounts several days in advance.
