Ironwood Trail Report – Gogebic Range Trail Authority – 01/28

Trail conditions are GOOD!

There’s a water hole between Blackjack Mountain – Big Snow Resort and Indianhead Mountain – Big Snow Resort south of Blackjack Rd please ride with caution. Bessemer to Wakefield groomed today.

The trail from Indianhead to Wakefield is very thin. Trail 2 was groomed to Marenisco & back last night (5pm-1am) and is in good to very good condition.

Trail 8 groomed yesterday and again tonight; it is also in good condition with some thin spots.

We are excited at how well they held up and 8-14′ forecasted by Monday! Come ride!

Thank you to Dutch's Old Bar in Marenisco for hosting our club meeting last night. It was obviously a very tear filled meeting with the recent loss of our beloved trustee, ORV Safety Instructor, groomer operator trainer & 2018 Groomer of the Year recipient Calvin Kangas. We've had our meetings at many of our Sponsor's locations but Candice, Maggie & Crystal went all out for us; Thank you!!!! Nan was out of town with Grand kids and Bill was busy prepping for the Softball Tournament this weekend. Regardless, get your butts in there and have some pizza and enjoy a great bar that supports our area trails. Thank you Bill & Nan! 😍💓 ... See MoreSee Less

Gogebic Range Trail Authority - ORV & Snowmobile Club

This isn't a snowmobile or ORV club post about our trials, tribulations or injustices; this is a post of reverence, sincerity and compassionate thanks - please read. The world lost an incredible human yesterday when we lost Calvin Kangas, GRTA trustee 2017-2019, to a heart condition while he was volunteering his time fixing hiking trails in the Porcupine Mountains. Calvin was a devoted humanitarian as displayed by his far reaching volunteerism for the many organizations he and his beautiful wife Susan supported. He always said, "Superman should be replaced with a "V" for volunteering because that is what makes communities great". Calvin joined the GRTA in January 2017 after showing up to our plea for help to groom our snowmobile trails. Little did I realize we were gaining a tremendous and accomplishing force of Yooper-man cloaked in flannel, KBC and Stormy Kromer. Every single time I had a stranger answer our call for help to groom trails I passed them to Calvin and he would make himself available to train them - mostly 7pm-2am. He would breathe dignity, compassion and logic into every situation we encountered coaching me all the way subliminally to make the right call. He always did 120% of what was asked and did it with the biggest Upper Peninsula smile you ever saw. The man drenched every room in positivity and warmth the likes I have never experienced. He passed on doing what he loved the most - creating public access to the beauty that is the Upper Peninsula. He bridged gaps between motorized and non-motorized groups over the basic principle that we are all here to appreciate mother earth's beauty. What he taught me most was to live your life the way you want, have FUN(!!), and SEW THE THIRST FOR MORE ONTO OTHERS. He left us far too soon doing exactly what he loved - volunteering on trails. Stay tuned for information on how you can pay homage to Calvin Kangas's legacy. This isn't about anything other than giving a damn about your community - which is what we feel Calvin's legacy is all about. Our heart is broken for now, but your spirit and legacy will love on through us. Thank you - Steve #onelife #calvinkangas #forevergrateful #volunteer #volunteerism #upperpeninsula #ewenmi #ironwoodmi ... See MoreSee Less

He had to be one of the best men I ever met. and he brought so much joy to everyone he knew. I'll never forget the math classes we shared--his humor kept us going. Sorry to hear of his passing. Til we meet again. A Classmate at E-TC.

How blessed I was to have Calvin for an uncle. He inspired me by his positivity and love of nature and people. What a beautiful tribute this is. 🌲Scott Vaughan

Our sympathies to Susan, Judy and family. Soar with the angels Calvin, you have earned your wings.

I did not know Cal for very long at all, having recently moved here. Met him through the Ni-Miikanaake Chapter: North Country Trail, and his enthusiasm and volunteer spirit was very evident in everything about him. He was a good and kind person, and he always asked me about mutual friends and made me feel welcome in a group where I was mostly a stranger. This past weekend the group held a hike and prior to departing, he spoke eloquently to the folks gathered about the North Country Trail, it’s purpose, our goals, and the need for fresh volunteers to take the reins and help make those goals a reality. I’ll remember that forever. If all of us capture and exemplify the same vigor and spirit as Calvin Kangas, those goals will become reality. Let’s do it.

Our deepest sympathies for the loss of a great guy, husband, volunteer, and fellow dog lover. Susan, please call if you need anything.

Tim and I are very shocked and saddened by your loss of Calvin. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you, his family and all that had the opportunity to meet and know Calvin. God Bless. Tim and Sarah Long

Heroes don't always wear a uniform. Thank you Calvin for everything you've done. We were blessed to have you in our community.

Here, here, I will miss you just like all the others, may I try to fill your shoes, Gods speed my friend. 🙄

May God give Susan the strength to bear her loss.

gone to soon but not forgotten...

We owe a huge thanks to T4 Land-Timber for quickly responding to our beaver dam/bridge issues on the rail trail to Marenisco from Wakefield. We nearly lost a bridge due to water running around it! Thank you Matt Tingstad and crew!!! They had to punch through the brush/mud packed 10' thick under our bridges! ... See MoreSee Less

Ironwood Trail Report – Gogebic Range Trail Authority – 01/19

This picture is trail 2 in Ironwood; the rail beds are holding up nicely and listed in good condition(discoloration seen from highway sand).

Grooming is currently not an option until temperatures drop below freezing.

The trail from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield is in poor condition, very low snow in spots, half of it is in good condition. We’ve seen a lot of sleds up here during the week and the trails haven’t degraded much at all. With the temps keeping us from grooming trail conditions could be rough by the weekend, however.

Please tread lightly on the trails, please stay on the trails, we’ll get out grooming as soon as the weather allows.

Think snow, not rain!
