Ontonagon Area Trail Report – 01/09

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Hamilton’s North Coast Adventures >> 10-/09

We’re hearing there’s no snow in White, Pine?! What the heck?! That’s where we are! Cripes, we even groomed all the White Pine trails last night! Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Our good buddy Josh Ramsey groomed trail 13 and 101 last night for our club North Country Snowmobile Club UP and was stopped by some “Iowa Boys” who said trails are great!

Water hazards exist, but we continue to improve our snow bridges as time and snow allow. The Lake of the Clouds & South Boundary road loops are PERFECT for riding. THERE IS SNOW IN SILVER CITY EVEN!

Rental sleds available all week and weekend! Come ride! Snow in the forecast!

1/8/25 TRAIL UPDATE
Josh R from da big city of TULA, MI sent in a video of him grooming a portion of 13 last night for his first solo run! Congrats, Josh!!!!

❄FRESH SNOW! 1-3″ seems to have fallen across the area. SNOW is forecast almost every single day for the next 10! Right now forecast is for minor accumulations, but it makes ALL the difference! Trails are rated fair with poor sections that have water hazards (trail 1 by Porkies, Trail 12 by Hamilton’s North Coast Adventures, and trail 12 east of 137) as well as EXCELLENT sections that make you forget about those other spots! We are performing groomer training this week and curtailed our normal grooming efforts to make the snow last. Over processing the snow can cause it to turn into “sugar snow” and no longer set up the way we need it to.

TRAIL 11 SOUTH BOUNDARY ROAD and TRAIL 1 from White Pine to Lake of the Clouds is getting groomed tonight.

TRAIL 12 from White Pine to 101, Trail 13 from 101 to 137 is getting groomed tonight.

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Scott's Superior Inn and Cabins >> ❄️ EPIC SNOW STORM ALERT! ❄️
We’re looking at upwards of 3 feet of snow to fall in the higher elevations of Porcupine Mountains 🌨️ The snowmobile trails were already in incredible shape, but this storm is about to make them absolutely legendary.
Late-season shredders and riders, this might just be the best conditions we’ve seen in years. Trails are primed, slopes are deep, and the winter fun isn’t slowing down anytime soon!

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> One of the most absurd snow forecasts we’ve ever made here at MSC, we’ve had to add an impromptu orange color for higher totals.
Key Notes:
•Snow begins to work into Michigan late tonight, but becomes more widespread during the early morning hours of Sunday. This snow continues through Tuesday morning for the UP, and becomes a snow/freezing rain/sleet mix for northern lower Michigan beginning Sunday afternoon/evening.
•Winds will gust between 40-60mph statewide both on Sunday and Monday.
•This will be a full on blizzard for much of the Upper Peninsula
•Expect scattered power outages across the state
•Travel will be near impossible for the UP and northern lower
Snow totals will be between one and four FEET when all is said and done on Tuesday in the UP. Further south, a mix is expected which will keep accumulations lower, and also will provide a sharp cutoff of accumulations. The difference between a foot of snow and 2” may be the width of one county.
Further south, this system will end as snow for lower Michigan on Monday & Tuesday, which is why we have a wide area within a trace to an inch, and western lower in a 1-3” zone with wording of higher totals possible. We may need to adjust totals here as new data comes clearer for Tuesday.
Stay tuned for the icing portion of this forecast. Northern lower Michigan will see significant icing which is not shown or communicated in this forecast graphic or write up. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskeyOne of the most absurd snow forecasts we’ve ever made here at MSC, we’ve had to add an impromptu orange color for higher totals.
