Ontonagon Trail Report – 12/29

Trail Report: Well, we got another inch of the white stuff last night, but there is still not enough snow to put down a good base. It’s pretty bumpy out there, but those moguls are dirt, not snow & ice, so without more snow, we cannot give you smooth trail. I rode a couple sections yesterday. It is still early season riding here and fairly technical. Go slow and keep your eyes open. Enjoy the scenery, the trees are full of snow and it’s beautiful out there.

Trail 137 – The railroad grade between Ontonagon and Rockland was panned yesterday. It is in fair condition but gets thin at the north end.

Trail 12 – We are working on this trail today between Ontonagon and 101, ride with caution. There is a huge water hole in the wooded section that parallels The Norwich Road west of Ontonagon. It is ridable if you skim it, but it is 3′ deep. The straight section that runs along the north side of LP Walsh Road just east of Hwy 64 has open running water in every low spot that doesn’t have a culvert or bridge. We recommend you ride the snow bank along the shoulder for this 4 miles. It is legal to do so, as this is a county road. Please ride with caution when you share the road with autos and trucks.

Trail 1 – From White Pine to Silver City is ridable, I ran it yesterday. With so little snow, the driveways are very elevated and it doesn’t take much speed to go airborne. There are many wet spots, but most are shallow or you can ride around them. There is one large waterhole that we have marked with signs and cones about 4/10ths of a mile south of Silver City. There are driveways on both sides of this hazard. Please ride out to the highway, run the shoulder and then right back into the trail. I saw lots of sleds running the shoulder of M64 for miles yesterday. It is illegal to ride on or ride the plowed shoulder of any Michigan state highway. (in this area: M64-M28-M38). When the trail runs along the hwy, you are allowed to come up onto the should to go around a hazard or cross a bridge when necessary, but then you MUST return back to the trail. County deputies, state troopers and DNR law enforcement will write tickets for this infraction.

Trail 13 – We have not gotten up to this trail yet, the boys are planning on clearing & panning it today. Ride with caution and check for the groomer location on the Groomer Tracker App. We have been told that with the large amounts of ice and heavy snow there are many low hanging branches on this trail. Ride with caution thru the wooded areas.

We will have more info for you as we get to the rest of the system. Please remember, 11 days ago we had bare grass in Ontonagon. We are doing our best to get the trails in shape, but we need more snow and cold to get er done right!

Ontonagon Trail Report – 12/28

Mornin Sled Heads. Well, we only got 4-6" of snow here in White Pine, and it was too warm last night to run the groomers.

We will be out today assessing the trail system and have a report for you later today…
