Lake Gogebic Trail Report – 01/11

January 11th, 2016 – With approx. 8 – 10-inches of new snow since Saturday and some extremely cold temperatures arriving during the early Sunday hours we’re getting set up for much improved trail conditions. Groomers are out on most of the trails – still doing some filling in any remaining wet areas – and should be over all trails by Tuesday. We’ve got more extreme cold through most of this week with additional snow amounts in the forecast for each day. Tuesday is calling for the most snowfall with upwards of 8-inches. This said, caution should still be used on all trails as conditions will probably run from poor to fair to good, but all trails will have some trouble spots on them for awhile.

That’s all for now from Carolyn at the Hoop. For additional information about the Lake Gogebic area please visit the chamber website at www.LakeGogebicArea.com or call us at 1-888-464-3242 (888-GOGEBIC).

Lake Gogebic Trail Report – 01/08

January 8th, 2016 — The too warm temps (low 30’s) we’re experiencing today will quickly be replaced by 20’s on Saturday for highs and down into the single digits Sunday thru Wednesday! Very good news as this will go a long way to freezing up any wet areas we’ve been battling. Also, new snowfall amounts over the last couple of days of about 8-inches have helped to soften some of those bumps on the trails. More snow is expected over this next week with varying amounts reported; one report has amounts totaling up to around 20-inches, another report says about 24-inches from the 11th to the 15th. A lot will depend on location as the higher terrain of the western U.P. (especially the north end of Lake Gogebic and the hills to the north of the lake) usually sees the most snowfall when Lake Superior lake effect snow sets in. All good news – if it happens the way it’s supposed to, and so far this winter the weather has been pretty unpredictable. Again, cross your fingers! Groomers are out panning the trails where they can run without doing damage to the already wet areas. I will let you know as soon as grooming with drags on is possible.

With many of the trails in poor condition at this point you might like to look to the “un-plowed Forest Service roads” for some riding. You may have to trailer to them but you may also save yourself some wet rides to get to them otherwise. Check in at the Ironwood, Watersmeet or Ontonagon Forest Service building to get more info on where you can legally ride.

I will keep you posted with any updates on the weather and on the trails.
