LAKE GOGEBIC AREA UPDATE via Gogebic Area Grooming – 12/24
First off, everyone from Gogebic Area Grooming would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!
Trail updates for Gogebic Area Grooming 12-25-2020: We finally got some snow!!! We have been running the trails with the pan and filling in the swamps with snow. We ask all of you that do come up to use caution when riding as this is the very beginning of riding. The trail conditions can change daily until we get more snow.
Trail # 1 from Bergland to Whitepine
This trail is has been packed and is not too bad of shape. Around the town of Bergland: *Use caution when traveling* A lot of swamps are frozen but we pushed snow to get across them. Travel slow when coming into town.
Trail # 1 South towards Marenisco from Trail # 8 (Ethelwood Grade)
This trail has been packed and also isn’t too bad of shape. HOWEVER, there is logging on the North end towards M-28 (turning off trail ). We ask you to travel the plowed portion very slow and with caution. All it’s going to take is one person to mess it up and we will have to close it to snowmobilers. Trail # 1 south from Marenisco to Wisconsin Border This trail has been packed as well and isn’t too bad for condition. Be careful of rocks that are sticking up from the trails as there is always less snow towards Wisconsin.
Trail # 8 east from Bergland to Ewen
This trail was packed and wasn’t too bad, just need more snow around the field areas near Ewen. Trail # 8 from Bergland to Wakefield. We didn’t touch this trail yet with a groomer. Wouldn’t use this trail until we get more snow to cover the swamps and for us to make snow bridges. If your going to or from Ironwood way, use Marenisco then travel trail 1 or 13.
Trail 102 from Bergland to Trail #11
This trail has been packed and is in alright condition. Few wet areas but not too bad. All passable.
Trail # 13 North from Bergland to 101
This trail was packed as is in alright condition.
Trail # 13 south from Bergland to Root Cellar
This trail was packed and is in alright condition. Few wet areas but not too bad. All passable.
Trail 13 south from Root Cellar to 100
This trail was packed and has a few wet spots! All passable
Trail #13 south from 100 to Trail # 2
This trail was ran by the groomer to open it up, but hasn’t been packed since the new snow fall. We might have issue with this trail soon with logging. We will keep you posted on this trail. Trail # 100 south end of Lake Gogebic
This trail is finally open to the original trail, and has very little east shore riding now. Trail has been packed as well, with a few wet spot. All passable. Watch for rocks sticking up west of the Gogebic County park.
So the question is always asked! “Can I ride yet”. Well the answer is, yes at your own risk. If you want to ride, go for it. If you want to have just even a good trails, wait for one more storm. Diehards always break trail first and have fun doing it, but it’s not for everyone. Snow is still on its way very soon! If you haven’t join our club yet, please do so.! We sure do appreciate it and also need it to make this possible.
Have a Merry Christmas And a big thanks goes out to our guys that have been working Christmas Eve and Christmas Day🎁🎄.
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> A strengthening Clipper low brings a 2-to-6-hour period of moderate to heavy snowfall to the UP today, with the greatest snow totals in the east. In addition, gusty winds will bring areas of blowing snow along the lakeshores. WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Here's our last call snowfall outlook regarding the system starting today, February 24th, and finishing up Wednesday, February 25th, 2026... #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #gaylord #cadillac #benzie#traversecity#petoskeyHere's our last call snowfall outlook regarding the system starting today, February 24th, and finishing up Wednesday, February 25th, 2026.
Discussion The only significant changes to the map shown since yesterday are the addition of a 6-12" zone to focus on the back-side lake effect snow through the end of the day on Wednesday that will bump up totals across the eastern Upper Peninsula, and a slight shift south of the 1-3" zone towards Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor. Besides a few wobbles, the 2-5" and 4-8" zones remain largely the same. The entire Upper Peninsula now has winter alerts issued for this incoming snow. Notice, we've added a dashed green line to denote that areas south of it will deal with greater uncertainty in higher snowfall totals due to daytime temperatures above 32°F, plus the presence of low-level dry air filtering into the state. There should still be enough time to give everyone a solid half inch across the state, but for those primarily south of I-94, that may be all.
For timing, truthfully, not everyone will see the peak of precipitation by the end of the day. The front will be taking its time as it crosses the state this morning and afternoon. Upper Peninsula west of Newberry, you'll see your snow beginning by noon. After the noon timeframe, it'll be everyone else across the state. Last to see the precipitation start today will be southeastern Michigan, where flurries/light rain may not start until after 10 pm EST. Remember, gusty winds are possible within this passing winter storm, and as such, travel will become difficult at times as visibility drops to under a half a mile within the highest snowfall rates. Travel with care, and make sure to turn on headlights AND taillights when driving in any snow squall. Snow will finish by noon Wednesday, but continue as lake effect for the Upper Peninsula through the end of Wednesday, as denoted by the circled yellow area.

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> Good morning, Sledheads! We groomed everything yesterday except Trail 11 and Trail 12 to Greenland. We have our trails back to good/excellent. Unfortunately, Trail 13 is the main corridor connecting the Western UP trail system. It takes a beating and traffic is high. Kudos to Wyatt, Jay, Chad B, Chad B2, Cody, Mac, Trent & Erika, Josh, Mike, Tomah Andy, Dave & Chloe, Steve, TJ and Steven for all their hard work this season. We are only as good as the operators who volunteer their time and energy to the cause. Thanks Cody for the pictures of last night's run! #ontonagon #westernup#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> TRAIL REPORT: Good morning, SledHeads - The cavalry has arrived!! Tomah Andy rode in as "Guest Groomer" last night, bringing his 10+ years of experience and laid down some pretty tracks for us. Our eternal thanks for your assistance! Jay is out now working on Trail 12 between Ontonagon and Greenland. The only trail that didn't get any love in the past 24 hours is Trail 12 between the Junction with 101 and the NCSC Clubhouse in Ontonagon. The guys are telling us that between the thaw, freeze, thaw cycle and the heavy, wet snow that came down this last week, these are some of the most challenging grooming conditions they have seen. We would rate trails fair to good right now. They need more love to whip them back into good/excellent. We have all 3 machines scheduled to go out tonight and are hoping to groom our entire trail system for your riding pleasure! #ontonagon #westernupTRAIL REPORT: Good morning, SledHeads - The cavalry has arrived!!
