Sault Ste. Marie Area Trail Report – 12/18

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/18

Video is from 12/16/25

Sorry I’m late on this put thought it was still worth sharing to show how things looked before this little warm up.

Here’s Pete’s report to go along with it-
“I took took New Dave out for his final training run down trail 8 to Brimley. We have been struggling with some engine computer wiring issues causing stalls. Some repair attempts were made, and this was an unscheduled test run as well. Bryan and his assistant Logan followed along to assist in case of another breakdown. Additionally, we wanted to take down the large leaning tree that’s been impeding the trail. Everything went well and the groomer made the trip with no issues. Dave finished up his training and will be headed out on his own soon. The tree came down without any hiccups. Even though it was warm out, the trail laid out smooth and flat. It was a great success and we are glad to have accomplished so much in one evening.”

Thanks all!

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> A fast-moving system this evening through tonight brings 4 to 8 inches of snowfall to the area. Most snow will fall within a 6 hour period with moderate to heavy snow rates (0.5 to 1+ inch per hour) and quickly reduced visibilities down to 1/4 mile or less for a 2 to 4 hour period. Snow will end overnight into early Monday morning. The Monday morning commute could be impacted, especially in the east, mainly for roads that have not been treated/cleared yet.
Late Monday night into Tuesday brings a wintry mix which could create more slick road conditions. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/3/26
Good morning everyone! 24” in the Soo, 30”+ in Brimley/Raco areas. 4-8” in the forecast through tomorrow. Lots of weekend traffic out there yesterday and here’s the scoop.
All operators are reportig that snow is soft and doesn’t set up great, but we’re doing what we can with it.
🔔 Unfortunately, we are Down 2 of 4 machines temporarily this morning. The Pisten Bully in Raco has a hydraulic leak again, and we are hoping that will be a a quick fix. The Tucker that was stuck is thawed out now and we’ll be going over it today to ensure it’s ready to go for our city run tonight. City trails will be a little rough til then. 🔔
❄️Trail 8- bumpy from the Soo to Brimley, but no deep moguls, just a lot of chatter bump in spots and will be groomed tonight. Brimley to Raco is was done last night and was excellent when I rode through there.
❄️ City Trails- part of 49, 449, 497, and the I500 courtesy trail- lots of drifting in the open areas, fair to good. Needs a groom to manage drifts and moguls, and we’ll get to it hopefully tonight once the Tucker is good to go.
❄️ ‼️ Trail 49 - Soo to Kinross- rough from Devils Hill to 12 mile, and we left the groomer out of there the last few days to let it freeze in more. Passable by sled with some wet spots, so use caution. Continued cold and sleds packing it will make a big difference. 12 mile north to the Soo is in much better shape, but will be getting bumpy with weekend traffic until we csn get the Tucker back out there. Please stay on the trail! There are water hazards under the snow off trail in several areas.
❄️49 south of M80 and the 494 loop- excellent. No issues here, other than maybe some drifts in open areas.
❄️472 out of Kinross to Tilson Rd- our first pass since the storm was made yesterday so it is much improved. Fair to good. We cannot groom past Tilson due to ongoing construction.

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/16

12/16/25

Thank you to Bryan, Logan, Pete, and Dave for clearing this gnarly widow maker from trail 8 between 5 and 6 mile. It was just sort of dangling there and would have made a real mess if left to fall on its own. Much safer for riders and our operators now.

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/16

12/16/25

Good evening everyone!

Trail 49 update, between the Soo and Kinross. Lane groomed from Kinross to 12 mile yesterday morning. He reports that he brought up some water between devils hill and 12 mile, but he was able to knock down a lot of the rough stuff and said it is getting better every trip through. He rode it after he groomed and it is passable, nothing too deep. He advises that you need to pick your lines to go around wet spots, which is typical in the early season. There were several sled tracks after he groomed👍🏼
Last night, Dennis groomed 49 from the Soo south to around 11 1/2 mile. There’s a ditch around there that he couldn’t get through so he back out and headed back. He said that there are still some wet spots to watch for, but it’s passable via sled.
Temps are still below freezing at night, even with a few days above freezing, and the thaw/freeze cycle should actually help that trail. We need some more snow to push into the wet spots and we’ll really be able to get this trail in good shape.
Thank you Lane and Dennis! ❄️❄️❄️
Remember, we are on Groomer Tracker! Half of each subscription fee comes right back to the club. We appreciate your support!

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Light snowfall across the area eventually dwindles away to pure lake effect over the northwest wind snow belts of the eastern U.P. tonight. Attention then turns to a quick hitting system Sunday evening/night. Heavy snowfall rates and low visibilities could create very difficult travel for a hour or two underneath the heavy snow. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaLight snowfall across the area eventually dwindles away to pure lake effect over the northwest wind snow belts of the eastern U.P. tonight. Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

🚨 472 and 480 to the Raco gate- please see the pinned post. We cannot groom in here yet due to bridge construction. The Raco gate is closed.
❄️ 480 from the Spile Dam turnaround to the Raco Powerline ( trail 8 ) - excellent
❄️ Raco Powerline- good, corner gets moguled out easily with heavy traffic
❄️889 The Mission Hill Loop- fair- all trees have been cleared and it groomed up nicely Friday, but the Pisten Bully is down temporarily so it may get bumpy in spots with heavy traffic.
Ride safe everyone!
