Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 03/01

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 03/01

3/1 Happy March! While we wish this beautiful snow would last, we know that the warm is coming today.

Here’s what I know-

49 from the Soo south of Alberta Lane to Gaines Hwy remains closed due to the beaver ponds.

8 from the Soo to Brimley and the city trails are very thin and rocky. Poor to fair in spots

49 and 494 south of Kinross are fair

472 west to 480 It’s thin but fair to good through there up to 480.

480 to 8 is fair out of the south, then excellent from Raco to 8.
8 east from Raco to Brimley is excellent the first 5 miles, then thin and rocky closer to Brimley.

889 is excellent except for one short stretch between Plantation and 8 that we couldn’t groom. Still fun to ride with lots of snow!! A tree is down on that part and easy to get around.
From Laurie, groomer Warren’ wife this morning-

“Pics from this morning at the 889 and Tower Road junction. Trails are holding up this morning. Don’t know for how long. These taken at 9:50am”

He did an AMAZING job out there yesterday! Ride it while you can! Remember, the forest service trails will hold up longer, but are not groomed trails so alway use caution! ❄️❄️❄️

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 3/1/2026
Good evening! Turbo and Diane did an earlier run for a change today on trail 8 from Raco all the way to the Soo. While we typically do not like to groom during the day on a weekend, sometimes that’s what we need to do due to scheduling purposes. With cold temps and light sled traffic, it should help keep the snow a little looser for cooling.
It was a beautiful sunny day, and they saw a few groups out enjoying it, and some wildlife too.
As a reminder, this is a shared trail with ORVs less than 65” wide between the Soo and the Raco turn off. This is only shared trail in our area, and it isn’t wide enough for a SxS and groomer to pass on the trail. They encountered one SxS today that turned around so that they could continue on their way. We appreciate the driver moving so that they could pass.
Thank you to the Turbos! Looking awesome! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0301b #snowphotos

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 3/1/26
Happy March everyone! Hard to believe it’s the last (official) month of the season. And what a season it has been!
We had another record traffic Saturday, and our operators have been working so hard to keep things as smooth as we can for you.
After a long, cold, and windy day on the St Mary’s River at the radar run yesterday, Brimley Bill got a few hours of sleep and then headed out to hit the Mission Hill route. We call this route M40 for our reporting purpsoes. It’s 480 from M28, to 8, to Ranger Rd, and the 889 grade and 889 loop in the Raco and Bay Mills areas.
Here’s his report-
“I groomed M40 early this morning. Pretty much all of 889 was really beat up. I did my best to cut out all of the bumps. Some of the curves were so bad that I was not able to completely remove all of the bumps, (probably 90% gone.). The trail 8 Powerline and 480 RR Grade were still in pretty good shape. I smoothed out whatever bumps were there.”
Thank you, Bill! You’d never know now that hundreds of sleds ran those trails yesterday! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0301 #snowphotos

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Lake effect flurries and snow showers are possible today, March 1st, 2026 across some of northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. With dry air mixing in, totals will be relatively kept in check, but a swath of 1-3", perhaps 4" is possible along M-28 south of Grand Marais. Changing wind fields will also allow for light/brief accumulations along some of our lakeshore regions in the Lower Peninsula, but it's not guaranteed for everyone. Timing is through the remainder of the day. Mild temperatures coming later this week, which should help begin the melting process for many. #miweather #keweenaw #munising #newberry #sooLake effect flurries and snow showers are possible today, March 1st, 2026 across some of northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/28/26
Good morning everyone!
While we certainly didn’t need the warm and sun yesterday, our hard working volunteers were itching to go as soon as temps dropped.
Our first report comes from Warren-
“We went out at 1 AM. Club member Steve & myself at 27 degrees did 480 from the Spile Dam turnaround, and 8 all the way to Brimley and back as well as the electric lines. I think everybody’s gonna be real happy with that, it cleaned up really well. I finished up at about 19° and then left the Groomer for turbo. Turbo is gonna hit the 889 loop and Brimley grade so I think everybody will be ready to go by about 7:30 - 8 o’clock for all of our trails out this way.”
Thank you, Warren & Steve!!❄️❄️❄️
Trail 8 from the Soo to Brimley will be done tonight, the city trails were done yesterday, and will be done again tomorrow night. I’ll update when I hear from the Kinross crew as well, but I know that everything was done on Thursday ahead of the warm up.
Be safe all and enjoy!
Hope to see some of you at the Radar Run at The Cozy Corners Barbeau MI today! The fun starts at noon! See their page for more info! #soo #soo0228 #snowphotos

Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 02/29

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 02/29

2/29 8 pm update-
What a day around here! If you’re not already here or plan to be here early tomorrow, I’m sorry to say that the trails will likely start to fall apart quickly with the coming warm up. Coming out of the Soo on trail 8 is not good. Thin and rocky as we didn’t get the snow that Brimley/Bay Mills/Raco/Strongs/Paradise did. If you’re in the Soo, your best bet would be to trailer. The forest service roads out there have a ton of snow and will hold up longer than the trails.
We were able to groom most of 889 and all of 8 from Brimley to Ranger rd, and part of 480. I have a report that the gate on 472 at Johnson rd is locked. I have no idea why but I’ll try to find out. We cleared a ton of fallen trees today. Big thanks to Groomer Warren and I believe his helper was Scott. There is still a big one on the straight part of 889 between 8 and plantation rd, but it’s easy to get around it. There are some big humps from snowdrifts there too so use caution! Groomer Raco Dave is heading out to smooth those out now. Other than that part, 889 is good to excellent as of this evening! And 8 from a mile west of Brimley to Raco is also excellent!
We also hosted some of the volunteers from other clubs that are in town for the MISORVA groomer workshop for a hot dog lunch at our groomer barn. Great to have the opportunity to meet like minded volunteers!
I spent my morning clearing trees and then got a 112 mile ride in. Had a great lunch and warmed up at The Cozy Inn in Brimley. Stop in and support them and enjoy the “cozy” atmosphere!
Get it while you can! Bring a saw if you want to hit fire roads. Still some trees down on those.
Ride safe!!!

<>

If you’re already here, trailer to Bay Mills/Raco. It’s worth it!

<>

2/29 🚨 CAUTION🚨 I’m starting to get many reports of downed trees everywhere. My day of riding has now turned into a tree clearing mission. I’ll be headed out in the club SxS to clear trees. If there are any club members that are available and want to go with, I am leaving the clubhouse in the Soo around 10.

Groomer Warren and his buddy will also be out in the tracked SxS. Please give us time to work and clear the trees, or help out if you can. Sounds like 889 and 8 in the Brimley/Raco/Bay Mills area have many trees down, and about a foot of new snow.
Please share, and again, please use caution!

Thank you!

<>

2/29 – good morning!
At my house in the Soo we got maybe 2-3” overnight. That’s probably being generous. The winds were crazy so I can’t tell for sure, but my gauge shows 5” total. Very light snow here now. Turbo checked in from Brimley and said there is a solid 8” out his way and it’s still snowing. A big thanks to Mr. Donnay for letting us know about a downed tree across trail 8 near Beune Rd, just west of Brimley. Also reported a foot of new snow there near Raco. Groomer Warren is heading out to cut it. As expected, it sounds like the highest snowfall amounts hit from Brimley west again. If you’re in our area, please comment with your snow totals. My assumption is that there are more than just the one tree down, so if you do ride, please be extra cautious. Carrying a saw is not a bad idea if you have the option. Again, I highly doubt we will send groomers out unless there are many trees down that need attention. Be safe!!!
