Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 11/29
SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 11/29
11/29 11pm update-
Holy cow, this is a lot of snow in a short amount of time🤯
Some pics from the day as we were out plowing to give you an idea what the Soo looks like. Town got less than the east end and Sugar Island.
23” here at my place off of trail 8 on the west side of town as of 7pm (it’s snowing again now), 2.5’-3’ on Sugar Island, town has easily 18”, probably more in spots.
South of the Soo didn’t get nearly as much, I don’t even think there’s a foot there but we are waiting for Kinross and Dafter to report.
Raco has 19”, and still waiting to hear on Brimley/Bay Mills.
Now to the question of the day… when will the trails be open and when will we start grooming? Short answer for the gated areas, I don’t know. The snow is very heavy, and we are hearing of downed trees in many places. We actually saw one fall today when we were plowing. In the non gated areas, it will be ride at your own risk. We are all digging out ourselves, and helping our neighbors do the same. We need to get out and assess the trails on sleds first. We know we will encounter many hazards. The ground was not frozen when this hit, so our wet areas will still be wet. We hope sleds can pack the snow into the wet spots to help them freeze in. Temps appear to be staying on the cold side into next week. The gated areas will remain closed until we can check them to ensure they are safe for at least sleds, then groomers.
Please remember that restrictions are still in place for hunters until Sunday, 12/1. Please obey the rules.
On Sunday, 12/1, the “official” opening day, a group of us will get as far as we can on trail 8 from the Soo toward Brimley, and also on the city trails. The Pisten Bully is still in the Soo, so it’ll be some time before Brimley and Bay Mills will be groomed, as that machine needs to be moved out that way. We will have people checking that area on sleds too.
Please, please do not ride alone in this. It’s heavy, and wet underneath. If you get stuck, it’s going to be miserable to dig out. Also, be sure you know where you’re riding and what’s underneath. The tow companies that can usually get you out will be busy helping motorists.
We get how exciting it is, and how eager we all are to get out and ride, but we want you to be safe. Please allow us some time to get you info before you come to ride. The snow seems to be very concentrated to a small maybe 20 mile radius. We’d hate to see people make the trip if there’s only a short stretch that’s rideable, especially when we can’t even think about going out until 12/1.
Word is that we may have an additional 15” in the next day and a half.
Crazy!
I got out on the trail at our place for a short ride and it sure felt great! I hope it’s a sign of a great winter ahead.
We’ll keep you posted! Hope you enjoy the pics❄️❄️❄️
