SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/28
12/28- the light rain continued through the night here in the Soo. Down to 10” here off of trail 8. When I’m out and about later, I’ll check some trail crossings to give you a visual. My gravel driveway is down to a thick ice base, so I imagine trails are similar.
We’ll be dealing with much of the same until Tuesday, then things start to get back to normal on Wednesday. The chance for significant lake effect snow kicks in too🤞
SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/10/26 From groomer Jay tonight- “City trails are good. I wouldn’t call them great, fair to good. OG (Original Groomer) Ben, and I broke through on the I-500 trail. That crew plowed the parking lot to prep for the race, so that’s rough, and will be until after the race, but also very wet. All in all the only real trail problems for our city trails is Seymour hill. We tried dumping snow in the water and were unsuccessful. We didn’t ride down the high school trail, but the Kewadin trail was in fair to good shape. Roads and shoulders will be bare, but the trails are in good enough shape to ride. We picked up a few inches as we groomed, but it didn’t help much. I will say, it was good to have Ben at the helm today. He’s a brother, and the one who really set the tone and showed me the ropes on how to groom trails. Hanging out together was a great day! Welcome Back OG, we missed you!!” Thank you Jay and Ben! Great to see Ben back in the seat!❄️❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0110b#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Widespread snow will begin to spread west to east this morning while a heavier snowband looks to set up in the central UP this afternoon. Uncertainty still remains where this snowband will park, however, heavy snowfall rates will likely create difficult travel along US-41 from Delta to Marquette/Alger counties. Tonight, widespread snow transitions to lake effect snow for the north wind snowbelts. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> Accumulating snow will continue to spread across northern Michigan today into Sunday. Accumulations remain consistent to this mornings forecast with 3-6” for most of the area and localized 7”+ possible where heaviest snow falls this evening and tonight. The combination of snow covered roads and reduced visibility will lead to hazardous travel across parts of the area. #miweather #gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskey #soo #newberryAccumulating snow will continue to spread across northern Michigan today into Sunday. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Dry weather persists for most of tonight. Then, light to moderate snow spreads across the UP early Saturday morning through the afternoon, with lingering lake effect snow in the north wind snow belts Saturday night. Lake effect winds down Sunday. Expect light snowfall amounts for most of the UP, but lake effect/enhanced snow may lead to locally higher amounts in excess of 4” across the snow belts of the western, north-central, and eastern UP by Sunday. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaDry weather persists for most of tonight. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/9/26 Good morning! It would be better if the rain had missed us, but it looks like we’re almost done with it. We lost another 4” of snow overnight, down to 18” here in the Soo, but still completely snow covered. No doubt that trails will be “crunchy”, and may even have some water pooling in spots, but I think we’ll fare just fine. That base is incredible! Cold returns tonight, and some snow tomorrow into Sunday. Temps look pretty good beginning late tonight. If you’re out riding, please let us know what you’re seeing. I’m not sure if we’ll have groomers out later tonight or not, as everything was pretty darn flat before the meltdown. I’ll keep you posted! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0109#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/26
12/26- day 1 of “the warm spell”. It was cloudy all day, steady 35 degrees. I heard sleds all day buzzing by on trail 8 right behind my house. My snow gauge reads 16”. Too warm to groom, but I doubt the trails suffered too much.
We’ll keep you posted!

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/25
12/25 evening update
We hope you all had a great Christmas
and also happy 1st night of Chanukah to those who celebrate! We hope you got to spend some time on the trails!
With warm temps coming, grooming will be on hold. With the hard work we’ve put in, they’re pretty darn flat, and we feel we’ve done all we can to pack and preserve a good base.
I’ll for sure still be updating as we move through this little warm spell. I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as many are fearing.
Tomorrow should be another great day to ride.
Get out while you can❄️❄️❄️

12/25- Merry Christmas everyone!
This morning, we took a ride and I can tell ya that Bill’s groom last night is holding up awesome! Here’s his report-
“Tonight on this Christmas Eve I took our Pretty Red Sleigh out on the Powerline, Trail 8 from Raco to Brimley, and Trail 480 part way down Spile Dam Road. I made some nice ribbons 🎀 in the snow for all the good boys and girls to enjoy.
Earlier today I was able to go out for my first snowmobile ride. I rode the trails around Mission Hill, after Raco Dave groomed them to perfection.
Hopefully the mild temperatures over the next week won’t have too much of a negative impact on the hard work of Raco Dave and his Trail Grooming Elves!”
