SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/03
1/3/25 11:45 Pm
From Brimley Bill tonight-
“Dave sent me out tonight to groom Trail 8 from Raco to Brimley, the Powerline, and Trail 480 part way down Spile Dam Road.
I’m pleasantly surprised how well the trail base held up after the recent thaw.
At times the blowing lake effect snow made for some poor visibility.
There was quite a bit of drifting snow on the edges that I was able to pull into the trail.
The trails in the Raco, Brimley, and Bay Mills area are looking good, and will just get better with the lower temps and lake effect snow.”
Sweet! Hope you all get to enjoy Bills efforts tomorrow! Thanks Bill! ❄️❄️❄️

1/3/25 2:15 PM trail update
Anything south of the Soo is thin. So that’s 49 south of 3 Mile which is still wet anyway, 494 around the Kinross airport, 472 out of Kinross and part of 480 up toward the Spile Dam. Snow gets better as you head north of M28.
Trail 480, to 8 and the 889 loop up and around Bay Mills was groomed this morning.
8 from the Soo to 6 mile has the most snow, varying from 10” new yesterday, to 5” more west as you leave town, then is thin through Brimley, gets better north of where 8 meets 889 in Raco. The city trails have a lot of snow, and there is blowing and drifting in the open areas which will continue due to gusty winds.
Behind Kewadin in the Soo is still too wet for a groomer at last check, but we will update once we can get in there and check. It will be rough since it has not been groomed this season. If anyone has been in there recently, please let me know.
We have been in and out of snow squalls here in the Soo on the west end where I live.
All trails other than the wet areas have a solid ice base. I got a report of 7” of new snow in the Dollar Settlement area which is the area north of Raco where a lot of the fire roads are that people also ride. We will be out again this afternoon checking conditions, and we will report what we see.
As you can see, conditions vary widely across our trail system. Always welcome rider reports in the comments. The winter storm warning is in effect until 7 am tomorrow.
Ride safe, ride right, and ride sober! Sheriffs will be out looking for stickers, and watching for full stops at the stop signs. Thanks all! ❄❄❄
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Widespread snow will begin to spread west to east this morning while a heavier snowband looks to set up in the central UP this afternoon. Uncertainty still remains where this snowband will park, however, heavy snowfall rates will likely create difficult travel along US-41 from Delta to Marquette/Alger counties. Tonight, widespread snow transitions to lake effect snow for the north wind snowbelts. Accumulations remain consistent to this mornings forecast with 3-6” for most of the area and localized 7”+ possible where heaviest snow falls this evening and tonight. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/9/26 Good morning! It would be better if the rain had missed us, but it looks like we’re almost done with it. We lost another 4” of snow overnight, down to 18” here in the Soo, but still completely snow covered. No doubt that trails will be “crunchy”, and may even have some water pooling in spots, but I think we’ll fare just fine. That base is incredible! Cold returns tonight, and some snow tomorrow into Sunday. Temps look pretty good beginning late tonight. If you’re out riding, please let us know what you’re seeing. I’m not sure if we’ll have groomers out later tonight or not, as everything was pretty darn flat before the meltdown. I’ll keep you posted! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0109#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Rain spreads into the UP this evening, transitioning to snow from west to east tonight. Snowfall rates of 0.5-1”/hr are possible late tonight into early Friday morning across the central UP, which will lead to hazardous travel as visibility drops as low as a quarter mile or less. Snow totals of 2-4” are possible across much of the central UP, with higher amounts of 4-6” in the higher terrain of Marquette and Baraga counties. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaRain spreads into the UP this evening, transitioning to snow from west to east tonight. WEATHER UPDATE via Pictured Rocks Marine Weather Conditions >> OK, here's the latest! Shown below is the expected 24-hour snowfall accumulation from 7pm today through 7pm Friday, along with the 24-hour snowfall from 7am Saturday through 7am Sunday. The 12-hour "gap" in between those two periods is the lull between the two waves of snow, when not much is expected to happen. And the snowmelt from the warm spell today should largely have ceased by then. More snow is also expected after 7am on Sunday and even into Monday, but it's a bit too early to call the snow amounts for that time period. SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/02
1/2/25 10:15pm-
Last update. Still snowing like crazy. 10” new snow today here in the Soo. As I’ve said all day, it’s VERY localized. Hoping more of our area gets hit with it overnight. I’ll be out tomorrow checking things out. As always, we appreciate rider reports and photos!
Good night all! Hope you all wake up to a winter wonderland! ❄❄❄
