SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/09

1/9/25
Good morning all! Pretty uneventful here as is usually the case mid week. The Pisten Bully came in to the barn to get warm on Tuesday, and to get some maintenance done. It’s already back in action in the Bay Mills area.

It’s been super cold! I had -13 here this morning. That is exactly what we need to freeze in the few wet spots on 49. I’m thinking we may be able to run a groomer down there this weekend🤞

The utility company will be getting the crane mats off of trail 494, and putting things back in order there. As soon as we are able to get in there and also into 497 by the high school, I’ll be sure to share! For now, see the pinned post regarding this area and use extreme caution if you ride that way.

Exciting news! Our website is almost ready for me to share! I’ll be posting that later today.

We could definitely use more snow, but all trails have fair to good snow coverage now. More in the northern areas, especially the Soo. I see a few inches here and there in the coming days. It’ll all help!

Thanks all, stay tuned for more updates! Ride safe! Think snow!❄❄❄

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/9/26
Good morning! It would be better if the rain had missed us, but it looks like we’re almost done with it. We lost another 4” of snow overnight, down to 18” here in the Soo, but still completely snow covered.
No doubt that trails will be “crunchy”, and may even have some water pooling in spots, but I think we’ll fare just fine. That base is incredible!
Cold returns tonight, and some snow tomorrow into Sunday. Temps look pretty good beginning late tonight.
If you’re out riding, please let us know what you’re seeing. I’m not sure if we’ll have groomers out later tonight or not, as everything was pretty darn flat before the meltdown.
I’ll keep you posted! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0109 #snowphotos

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/7/26
Good morning everyone!
Bryan and his son Logan hit the city trails last night, ahead of the little warm up we’re having through Friday.
As all operators have been saying, the snow is still very soft, which does make moguls appear faster. Things smoothed out really nicely, and this thaw/refreeze cycle will really help lock in the trails now.
The tunnel under I75 was gathering more snow than we’d like as we have to be mindful of the Tucker clearance, so he worked on pushing some of that out of there.
Thank you Bryan and Logan!
This was likely the last grooming run until Friday as we get through the next few days of warmer temps. Everywhere is as flat as we can get it until Friday.
Today marks 1 month until the greatest race on ice, the International 500 Snowmobile Race!
We’ll be in the brand new vendor pavilion, where Sugar Island Chris and crew will be serving up the worlds best hot cocoa, and answering your questions about our club and the trails that we maintain.
I plan to head up to the track often and I’ll update how the ice is looking over the next month.
Make plans to be here! You can ride your sled to and from the track. Saturday, February 7th!
Hope to see you here! 🏁 ❄️🥶 #soo #soo0107 #snowphotos

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/08

1/8/25
Good morning! A couple reports for you today.
Bryan and his son Logan (future SSMSA groomer) hit the city trails last night. The water hole that Pete and Jay worked on the other night is non existent🙌🏼 The other one between the hills is also frozen solid now for sleds, but he took the bypass in the groomer, just in case. We should be able to run over it in the groomer soon. All in all, nothing notable and they had a good run.

Dennis P ran 472 west and 480 to the Spile Dam turnaround. Snow is thinner to our south, but as you can see, trails still have really good coverage.

We could definitely use more snow over our entire system. Looks like Tuesday – Thursday of next week is our next chance as of now.

Thanks all! Ride safe! Think snow! ❄❄❄

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/07

1/7/25 update
Sunny skies and coooooold temps are the story here today. Definitely welcome the cold to help us freeze up the few remaining trouble areas on 49 south of 12 mile.

We haven’t received any new snow since the lake effect came to an end on Sunday morning. Not anything significant in the forecast this week as of right now.

Lower weekday traffic and no new snow means grooming will likely be slowed down. I know that the Pisten Bully is coming in for repairs since it’s a good time to do it. Nothing major and it’ll be back in the Raco and Bay Mills area in no time.

Everything should be pretty flat. Trail 8 sees the most traffic, and will likely see some choppy areas due to thin spots, but absolutely rideable. I’d call it fair to good.

For info on what has been groomed most recently, please subscribe to Groomer Tracker.

We have a board meeting tonight, and we’ll discuss getting the high school trail open, among other things. Members are welcome to attend. 6 pm at the Soo groomer barn, located at 1205 W 9th Street.

Thanks all! Ride safe, ride right, ride sober! ❄❄❄

<>

We just received further confirmation, this time from the U.S. Coast Guard, that the ice on the bay in Brimley is unsafe. They conducted training there today and broke through. Please stay off of the ice. Take trail 8. It’s groomed, and dry😉🥶
