SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 01/12

1/12/25
If you left today, I’m truly sorry! We are getting fresh snow and wow what a welcome sight! A group of us, a few members and volunteers, took a ride up toward Paradise today. We tried to get there, but there is a pretty nasty water hole on 8 just north of Lakeshore. I would not go that way until the Paradise club says it’s frozen over. We turned around and took Lakeshore to 123 to 474 to Hulbert and back the same way.

Beautiful ride!

On our return trip, we ran into groomer Dan with the Chippewa Snowchasers club on trail 8. Shout out to him for smoothing out the weekend whoops after a crazy busy weekend! Awesome work Dan!
8 back on our trail system and the city trails are holding up great. The fresh snow will only make things even better!
Hope you all enjoy as much as we did! ❄️❄️❄️

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/9/26
Good morning! It would be better if the rain had missed us, but it looks like we’re almost done with it. We lost another 4” of snow overnight, down to 18” here in the Soo, but still completely snow covered.
No doubt that trails will be “crunchy”, and may even have some water pooling in spots, but I think we’ll fare just fine. That base is incredible!
Cold returns tonight, and some snow tomorrow into Sunday. Temps look pretty good beginning late tonight.
If you’re out riding, please let us know what you’re seeing. I’m not sure if we’ll have groomers out later tonight or not, as everything was pretty darn flat before the meltdown.
I’ll keep you posted! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0109 #snowphotos

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Today, the morning fog and freezing drizzle will give way to a quiet but warmer than normal day. Fog returns tonight, though the weather remains quiet until a system passes south of the UP Thursday afternoon, bringing a wintry mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow to the UP, though the heaviest rain will fall along the Lake Michigan shores. Once this round of precip wraps up Friday afternoon, attention then turns to the potential for weekend snowfall, though plenty of scenarios are still possible, so those with weekend plans sensitive to winter weather should monitor the forecast. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaToday, the morning fog and freezing drizzle will give way to a quiet but warmer than normal day. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/7/26
Good morning everyone!
Bryan and his son Logan hit the city trails last night, ahead of the little warm up we’re having through Friday.
As all operators have been saying, the snow is still very soft, which does make moguls appear faster. Things smoothed out really nicely, and this thaw/refreeze cycle will really help lock in the trails now.
The tunnel under I75 was gathering more snow than we’d like as we have to be mindful of the Tucker clearance, so he worked on pushing some of that out of there.
Thank you Bryan and Logan!
This was likely the last grooming run until Friday as we get through the next few days of warmer temps. Everywhere is as flat as we can get it until Friday.
Today marks 1 month until the greatest race on ice, the International 500 Snowmobile Race!
We’ll be in the brand new vendor pavilion, where Sugar Island Chris and crew will be serving up the worlds best hot cocoa, and answering your questions about our club and the trails that we maintain.
I plan to head up to the track often and I’ll update how the ice is looking over the next month.
Make plans to be here! You can ride your sled to and from the track. Saturday, February 7th!
Hope to see you here! 🏁 ❄️🥶 #soo #soo0107 #snowphotos

Sault Ste. Marie Area Trail Report – 01/12

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 01/12

1/12/25
Raco/Bay Mills update from Brimley Bill-
“This morning I groomed the power line and Mission Hill Loop 889. The trails were beat up from the high sled traffic yesterday, but there was plenty of snow to work with. I was able to cut down and fill in the moguls, even in the winding section of 889. I was out and done before any sled traffic, so there trails should be set up nice and solid.”
Awesome job Bill! ❄️❄️❄️

1/12/25
Our crews were busy last night! I ran the city trails with Jay, and we got 497 open! Yay! Not many pics as I was the operator for the majority of the run last night. Jay hopped in the seat to help with 497 in the really gnarly spots. It’s looking great now! I used the limb masher A LOT to clean up some overhanging brush. More needs to be done, but I got some big ones out of the way!
Chris warns that trail 49 south of 12 mile still has some wet spots. We simply need more snow to be able to pack them. It’s coming!
I haven’t heard from the Raco crew but I know they were out last night too.
If you’re riding today, we hope you enjoy our overnight efforts!
Join or donate today at www.sootrails.org
Thanks all! ❄️❄️❄️

I’ll keep you posted! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0109 #snowphotos
