Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 12/21

Greetings Sledders,

Please excuse the delay in getting this out but we’ve been waiting on the forecasts to settle in on snowfall projections related to this event that’s supposedly going to unfold on us. Unfortunately the various weather sources that we all use are still pretty far apart. There’s everything from an inch to 4 plus being kicked around so we’re really in the dark and at the mercy of Mother Nature once again. It’s in these brief moments of uncertainty when I occasionally try to reach back in my memory banks and remember the words of wisdom that my Grandfather would impart upon me.

Right now the trails are in poor condition and we need several inches of snow in order to fire up the groomers and get started again. We were in the panning process last Saturday and got roughly half of the trails done before we had to shut everything down on Sunday because sled traffic had the snow that we did have pretty well beat down. Our drivers are good at what they do and are careful with the trails this time of the year but you can’t expect them to make a silk purse out of anything because that’s a completely different skill set.

Temps look to be on our side so whatever we do get out of this system or Lake Effect will stick around, in fact it looks like next week will be under armor cold so be sure to bring them along.

We will get out a report on Sunday and hopefully be in a position to give you something more definitive.

Ride Often and Please Be Safe,
Keith, Sandy and The Girls

Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 12/14

Greetings Sledders,

Well it looks like it’s time to bring this thing out of mothballs, dust it off a bit and get back in the business of giving you folks an honest assessment of the trail conditions.

First of all for those of you who are new to this report, we are Keith and Sandy and we own Fay’s Motel which is located a mile and a half north of downtown Grayling. We have an acre of parking outback for the less important tow vehicle and you can park your sled right in front of your room. When you are ready to ride you simply ride out the back of our property to Lewiston Grade Rd, down a mile to the Frederic Trail or stay on the road and it takes you directly to the Lovells Trail. Lewiston Grade is a gravel County Rd and the speed limit is 35 mph fyi.

This is my 18th year of both writing this report and grooming the trails, I figure another year or two and I might just get the hang of one or the other so bare with me, apparently I’m somewhat of a slow learner.

Based on the number of recent phone calls it would seem that some of you guys are getting a little anxious to get going and I guess I don’t blame you, I was that way back in the day when there was something other than a large tractor under my butt, unfortunately those days are behind me, no pun intended.

So here’s the latest poop.

We have snow on the ground but only about 6″ or so. We’ve had more than that fall and it’s been mostly in the form of Lake Effect which doesn’t have a lick of moisture in it and it likes to compress a lot, basically to about half of the original depth. Four winds up being two and so on. So the bottom line is that we are not quite to where we need to be to fire up the tractors in order to go play in the woods with heavy equipment, but we are getting there.

People have been riding and I would have to rate the trails at poor to fair. Keep in mind that any ride that you might get is early season with no established base and you are going to encounter sand and the occasional rock along the way.

I know it’s a ways out but the weather forecast looks promising for the holiday. Keep everything crossed.

Ride Often and Please Be Safe,
Keith, Sandy and The Girls
