KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 02/18

It seems as if winter came and went all within two weeks, back in January, and then the “2nd winter” decided to show up for this weekend! How long will it last? 🤷‍♀️ 🤷🏻‍♂️ We aren’t sure, but we know for some, it was just what they had been waiting for!
We’ve heard from so many groups out riding today and they have all been very positive reports. All of the riders have agreed that they were very glad they decided to chase the snow, as with the way winter has been, they knew they couldn’t sit around and wait for “perfect” conditions or they may not get a single ride in!

Earlier today we shared reports and photos from Brent Mason, Adam Garvey, Tegan Noltner, Jeff Schmuhl and Mandi Schmuhl! Jake Groteboer just shared his photos and comments with us and he agrees with what the other riders have all expressed…. Trails were surprisingly very good!

Jake said, “Fantastic riding in the Keweenaw this weekend! We rode from Houghton to Lac La Belle today and had freshly groomed trails the entire way. I even snapped this photo of the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club groomer with his dog! Thanks to all the clubs and volunteers for their hard work this weekend! The Ladies at the Lac La Belle Lodge / Bear Belly Pit Stop were fantastic and even kept the store open late for us to get food and gas last night 🙏 while we were out riding!

This is by far the worst winter I can recall. Such a rare occurrence that the Keweenaw doesn’t have a boat load of snow in February. Unfortunately, the weather isn’t looking to be in our favor. This may have been my last ride of the year 😕

I’m totally hoping for a huge snow dumping yet! Glad we had the opportunity to ride this weekend!”

Thank you so much for sharing Jake and we are equally as glad that you were able to ride this weekend! We still have faith in the usual St.PattysDay storm that the Keweenaw should receive! ❄️🕺💃

We included a map in the photos that TV6 shared of the snow coverage across the U.P. ….. With the way this winter has been, riders need to keep an eye on the forecast and be ready to chase the snow as it’s falling!

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Lake effect flurries and snow showers are possible today, March 1st, 2026 across some of northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. With dry air mixing in, totals will be relatively kept in check, but a swath of 1-3", perhaps 4" is possible along M-28 south of Grand Marais. Changing wind fields will also allow for light/brief accumulations along some of our lakeshore regions in the Lower Peninsula, but it's not guaranteed for everyone. Timing is through the remainder of the day. Mild temperatures coming later this week, which should help begin the melting process for many. #miweather #keweenaw #munising #newberry #sooLake effect flurries and snow showers are possible today, March 1st, 2026 across some of northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 02/17

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 02/17

Well we have our “white” and our “greens” back! Yay for the snow that we received and for grooming operations back marking the Groomer Tracker up showing trails that were hit last night! Huge thank you to The U.P. Superior Snowmobile Club and Keweenaw Snowmobile Club for getting out there and doing what they could!

Trail 3 from Mass City to Houghton was groomed/panned and prior to grooming operations, riders reported the areas around Twin Lakes had received more fresh snowfall. Please see a few of Brent Mason’s photos from yesterday afternoon. Brent made the last minute decision to head up to the Keweenaw just to put a few (s)miles on and support the area businesses! He enjoyed a delicious meal (as always) at Boondock Inn U.P. North Resort! Brent said he will probably start riding out of the Twin Lakes area today and let us know how he finds trails today! Thanks Brent!

Trail 17 from Hancock and Trail 3 up to 134 and then 134 up to the Copper Harbor had grooming machines down them last night, as did trail 132 according to the Groomer Tracker App.

Adam Garvey and crew shared a few photos of their ride yesterday also north of Phoenix. Adam would like to remind riders that you can find him today at The Mariner North – stop in for a warm up and some delicious food! Then on Sunday at 10am any one is welcome to meet at Adams/Frosty’s on Lac La Belle for breakfast and a ride around the Keweenaw area!

The snow that fell last week across the area was lake effect snow and there is a couple more inches in the forecast for today! Winter is trying to reenter and we are optimistic that March riding will be good!

If you don’t yet use GT, please download the app and subscribe to the trail systems you ride for up to the moment grooming operations!

Follow Midwest Weather for continued forecasts! You can checkout webcams on the www.johndee.com website and we shared the The Trailside Lodge/Copper Country Rentals current shot along Trail 17! Check them out for your lodging and rental needs all year round!

✅The Portage Lake Lift Bridge has been REOPENED and sleds may cross.
🚫 Trail 122 is closed for logging You can still access Lake Linden via trail 3
🚫 Trail 124 is closed for logging – You can still access Gay via trail 133 (condition unknown)
⚠️ The short trail spur to High Rock Bay has not been groomed at all this season and does still have a water hole on the way out to the point

The businesses of the entire area miss seeing you all and are just as excited to see the snow as the riders are! Stop and frequent as many as you can either by sled or vehicle!
