MUNISING AREA UPDATE via Alger County SORVA – 03/07
TRAIL REPORT – Sunday, 03-07-2021 FAIR TRAILS HANGING ON! No significant Changes. Groomer Operators reporting fair results with no new snow. We have a very hard light chop base with sugary snow and some icy corners. Most of our Trail System is in Overall Fair condition getting icy in sections under the soft snow and some outlying areas in poor condition. Trails give a deceiving look after grooming as we are only knocking the tops off of the small rock hard moguls. The ribbon left behind is blowing out after a few dozens sleds pass through getting back to a light chop. Trail 8 from Shingleton West to Trail 417 is a bit choppy in areas but fairly flat. Trail 417 to Brownstone Intersection and Trail 7 from 2 miles South of Christmas South to Buckhorn Road and Trail 418 are in Fair condition and a bit choppy. Trail 7 South of Doe Lake Road and Trail 419 from Wetmore to about 2 miles Northwest of Munising are in poor condition. In the towns and along highways you will be finding dirty snow and bare spots. Trail 8 North of Shingleton is fairly flat with some chop for 7 miles North of Shingleton. This section is listed as Poor due to being very thin for the first 4 miles heading North with a few bare patches and bare or icy corners. Unless we get a significant surprise snowfall the season is winding down. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> It will be warmer today with highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Light snow is possible south of an Iron Mountain to Escanaba line but any accumulation will be very light. GWINN AREA UPDATE via Forsyth Snowmobile and ATV Club >> Trail update for Gwinn area, Central Upper Peninsula. Our town is in need of snow, took a ride East over towards Alger County and they definitely have more snow over that way. Buckhorn area was smooth all the way down south and across over to Big Springs area. Big Springs area north had some small rocks on the trail and once we got by the Jack Pine Trails were good again. Came through shingleton and quite the snow storm at 6:00 on Saturday evening. Unfortunately the snow didn't come to our town. Additional snowfall of up to an inch in the west and 1 to 3 inches in the east can be expected. WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Here is our last call for ongoing system snow and lake effect snow from now through Sunday evening at 6 pm EST, December 20th & 21st, 2025.
Uncertainty exists primarily in our trace-1" category which extends from Frankfort and Alpena south to I-96/I-69. The clipper moving through today may produce a quick squall of rain & snow with minimal accumulation some time beyond 1 pm EST, but models haven't determined if this band will solidify or not. If it does, the chance for a rain/snow mix exists in areas highlighted in the pink dashed box. This rain/snow mix would only be today. Any snow on Sunday will be lake effect off of Lake Superior, hence why our highest totals of 4-8" are located east of Munising over to Paradise. Then a transition over to lake effect snow over the west to northwest wind snowbelts. 3 to 7 inches of snowfall over the east tonight into Sunday morning.

A widespread 1-3 inches of snow is expected, possibly locally higher up to 3-4in in the eastern UP. A change over to lake effect snow is expected in the NW wind snow belts Saturday afternoon, lingering into Sunday.
