Newberry Trail Report – 02/01
NEWBERRY AREA UPDATE via TASA – 02/01
The far north part of our area received significant snow yesterday, the trails are very good in the majority of the area. We groomed to the falls last night, north to trail 431 and south to trout lake. We now have two groomers down so we will continue to do what we can. Tonight we are planning to groom north to holland lake. Every trail has some logging on it also there are some water holes still open in a few spots so please ride with caution and care! The details are below for specific trail grooming. Also as I wright this report the sun is shinning and it is 1 degree outside!!
In other news we are raffling off a a 2023 Polaris Sportsman 450 Donated by Renze Power Sports.

Drawing held April 22, 2023 @ 7:00pm at the Elks Lodge in Newberry
300 tickets printed
If less than 125 tickets are sold then the raffle will revert to a 50/50 drawing.

Curfew in the Village of Newberry is 11:00pm to 7:00am.
Trail 9: We groomed north to trail 431 last night. Very Good! logging operations are finishing up but county road 422 is still being plowed to finish hauling everything out, so be careful roads are icy.
Trail 498: groomed yesterday. Very Good.
Trail 45: The gate is open to the Falls. We groomed to the falls last night. very good. There is logging on the trail shortly after you jump on Trail 45 just past the Logging museum off of M-123. There is also be logging about 3 miles North of Skyline Road off to the right. Please use extreme caution in these areas! Both portions are being plowed and could be bumpy or rutted. Very Good to excellent in spots!!
Trial 9/2: we groomed to trout lake last night. Good.

Hard to predict the total so far , but I'd say 20" and blizzard warnings for another 18 hours. Definitely closed until further notice. If your needing to be out, but shouldn't be Paradise Rec Sports did post they were Open until 6 pm. Glad someone can accommodate for emergency sake. Wheelhouse Diner is also Open. I'd advice to stay off road so county plow trucks can do their job without risk of someone stuck on highway, which report big truck near Rivermouth stuck on M123 in snow drift. 14 degrees this morning and the blizzard is still going strong! Its been 24 hrs. straight and they are saying another 24 before it lets up. Its crazy out der folks! I`ve got drifts at least 6` high and I`ve got one door open enough to even get outa my house! I`ve lived in da yoop for almost 26 yrs. and can`t remember anything like this. As far as the trails go.....I think its gonna be another day or two before we can get out.....I`m actually thinking not until Wednesday.....but we WILL be out as soon as we can. The trails will probably be a blast right now for all you drift busters but you groomed trail riders will have to wait a couple days till we can get to it. Bout all I got for now. If you do head out for a ride today be mindful of possible blown down trees and crazy drifting and be safe!

Its Sunday afternoon, 5pm, and a down right blizzard out der. I don`t remember seeing a storm this bad in a long time. Thought I would jump on here real quick cause social media is going crazy thinking we are done grooming. This is far from the truth! We are done on the Falls trail #45 and the swamp on trail #8 just south of town cause that last warm up really put a hurtin on them. The warmer swamp water really started to flow cause of the melt and caused a lot of open spots. We WILL NOT risk swamping a machine! We are gonna wait out this blizzard and get back at it on all the other trails. This may not be until Tuesday or even Wednesday as this is supposed to last until Monday night or early Tuesday morning. We have to dig ourselves out too!!!! Sooooo....please be patient. I will jump on here tomorrow morning and give ya`ll an update.

Blizzard Warnings have moved South to include Leelanau, Emmet, Cheboygan, Southeastn Chippewa, Mackinac Island/Bois Blanc, Beaver Island. Ice Storm Warnings have moved South to include Wexford, Missaukee, Oscoda, Alcona and Alpena Counties. Winter Weather Advisories now include Clare, Osceola Counties.
The warm line is farther South keeping higher totals North. Winds continue to pick up along with the snow tonight.

Phase 2 of the Winter Storm is kicking off! This will bring heavy snow and gusty winds still for the U.P. and Tip of the Mitt. The icing area we have talked about for the last few days landed where we thought it would. Leelanau down to Wexford and Northeast. These areas could see up to .5" of ice through today and tonight with isolated higher amounts. Winds will continue to gust upwards of 40-50mph. The snow totals map you see is on top of what you have already seen.
Don't be fooled, the lull from the initial burst to the second part is the system nearing. The second phase will be the worst with this storm. This afternoon - Monday morning.

A dangerous ice storm will begin tonight for portions of northern lower Michigan. The heaviest ice accretion takes aim in a localized area from Traverse City to Gaylord to Atlanta with over 0.50" of ice expected. Around this area, a zone of significant icing between 0.25' to 0.50" is expected - which is still enough to take down tree limbs and create power outages. The worst of the icing will be tonight into Monday morning, and then we deal with high winds moving in Monday morning as well which will only exaggerate the effects of this event.
