SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/12
-Update as of 1/12-
***editing to add that we have a guy out on part of the city trails panning now***
Good morning all! We are back in a holding pattern until we get more snow. Most of our trails have at least been panned, with the exception of trail 49 south of the Soo to Gaines Hwy which is closed due to excessive water, and also the city trails have not been panned yet due to not enough snow. The storm isn’t supposed to start until 8 or so tonight, and is expected to bring 4-6” inches by tomorrow AM, then another few inches by midday tomorrow. High winds are also expected, so we may see downed trees. This is our complete trail report for now, which also can be found on the misorva.org page. Don’t forget, we are also on the Groomer Tracker app!
*Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –
Fair- thin, panned on 1/10
*Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 and #480 to just west of Spile Dam- Fair to Poor- thin, a few wet spots, panned on 1/10
*Mission Hill trail #889

*Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49
Poor- thin, some wet spots, we cannot groom here just yet.
*Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

*Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480- Fair- thin, panned 1/10

Ride safe, ride right, lead right, ride sober!❄️❄️❄️

This is from Groomer Lane yesterday on his run on the southeast side of Kinross, trail 49 and 494. “I panned and packed in and trimmed with sickle bar on 49 and 494 today. All we need now is cold and snow. Trail looks good.” Thank you Lane!

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/24/25 Merry Christmas Eve! A curious deer checked out our snow gauge overnight. A bit of a warm up kept groomers parked yesterday, but cold has returned this morning, and there’s a decent amount of snow in the forecast in the coming days. Things were super flat before the warm up yesterday, so once again we have an excellent base. We will keep you posted! Enjoy time with your families and friends 🎄❄️ #soo #snowphotos... WEATHER UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> I'm going up north to the U.P of Michigan on Friday to chase a potentially significant lake effect snow event from late Saturday night through Tuesday. Snowfall accumulations could be 1-2', if not higher, as high-res model guidance comes in when we get closer. Another lake-effect snow event is increasingly likely behind an arctic front next Wednesday night through Friday, which we will need to keep an eye on. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea#gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskeyI'm going up north to the U.P of Michigan on Friday to chase a potentially significant lake effect snow event from late Saturday night through Tuesday. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> It will be warmer today with highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Light snow is possible south of an Iron Mountain to Escanaba line but any accumulation will be very light. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/21/25 Groomer Jay and I just finished the city trails. Aside from the car on trail 8 near Ashmun Bay, things look really good. We saw a little water on the trail to Kewadin as pictured, but that was honestly the worst part of the whole run. It was snowing hard for the last hour of our run. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well things held up after the warm up last week. We keep saying it, but we truly are very pleased with where things are this early seaon. Let’s hope it continues! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/21/25 Happy Winter Solstice!! Beautiful shots from Brimley Bill this morning on his run of parts of 480 north of M28, the Raco powerline portion of trail 8, and the 889 loop! Fresh snow over the solid base that the thaw last week helped to create = some awesome trails! Thank you Bill! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
GRAND MARAIS AREA UPDATE via Grand Marais Sno-Trails Assoc. – 01/12
Just a quick update on the the trail conditions from groomer Al. I ran our north trail (8-888-88) and the majority of the trail is thin. 888 has a lot of bare spots, some water holed, and is rough. The base in the best spots is at most 2-3 inches, and is easily spun to dirt. Even the dirt is still soft!
I also hit the southern end of our west trail (88-88/43-8) with the same conditions on those as well. The section of trail 8, south of the park and ride at the hairpin corner, has been plowed as there are loggers working in that area. The section on 88/43 that is marked wet area has standing water and mud. H58(😎 is snow covered and we panned from the park headquarters to the split of 8/89.
As we all know, WE NEED MORE SNOW and some cold temps. Ride safe guys/gals and go easy if you can!!! EDIT: I put 2 video clips in comments!

Getting mixed messages here. The following was posted yesterday for the area. Can maybe a third party help those of us traveling to find a good ride this week?

PARADISE AREA UPDATE via Paradise Area Night Riders www.paradiseareanightriders.org >> 12/22/25 12 degrees this morning under a mostly clear sky. Here`s the trail report on how things went yesterday..... We took 2 machines w/o drags and headed out on the Falls trail #45. Unfortunately I can`t give you any good news. It was U.G.L.Y. In fact, da boss said it was the worst he`s ever seen....bummer. He did say you could make it from the Upper Falls to the Lower to get fuel at the Lower but be careful. From the Lower Falls to Paradise IS NOT PASSABLE!!! There is a video on our FB page to show you how bad it was. We need more snow and cold to even try this again in a groomer. Word of warning.....it is ILLEGAL to ride on M-123 from town to the Falls! Nothing else was run, we need more snow. The Point trails are ridable and the Pine Stump trail is also but thin in a lot of spots. We haven`t ran south on trail #8 since last weekend either. Simply put, we need more snow. This weeks forecast doesn`t look that promising for any great amounts either. Sorry for all the bad news......just being honest. I`ll let ya`ll know when things start improving. LET `ER SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Groomer Chris #paradise #newberry ... See MoreSee Less
