SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/15
1/15- city trail update Groomer Jay and I were asked to try and groom the city trails today, the first groom here this season. We know these trails well, and the many challenges we face in early season conditions. Knowing that the Soo only has maybe 9” TOTAL on the ground, we decided to take the sleds out first to check things out.
As suspected, much of the city trail system is very thin, down to an inch of packed snow, dirt, and leaves. The areas where we see heavy drifts were very moguled, and much of the area was only a sled and half wide due to tall grasses and tag alders that are normally knocked down by snow by now. We knew we had to at least get out and try to define and widen the trail. We also wanted to check on and widen the trail behind Kewadin to make sure there are no open mud and water holes. Good news there as it was all frozen.
We set out under under a beautiful sunset, but that’s where the beauty stopped. Through the tunnel, and up to the airport fence is super thin and bumpy. There’s literally nothing we can do there. We just need snow. Along the airport, we were able to smooth out most of the moguls caused by drifting, so that’s good. We also groomed the courtesy trail to the I-500 track and the Holiday Inn, widening it and defining the edges. Then we headed across the business spur and did what we could to widen 49 behind Walmart and to the DonDee Lanes. Next up, we made our way to the new section of 449 toward Seymour, the high school, and Kewadin Casino. The new section from the intersection is beautiful! Nice and wide. Sault Tribe Construction did a great job cutting this trail for us! There was a giant snow pile somewhat blocking the trail, so we helped ourselves to some of it to add to the trail LOL.
Next, 449 to Kewadin. We knocked down the cattails and groomed the path where the trail is supposed to be so that riders can stay on the correct path. Next up, the part right behind Kewadin where we had a heck of a time last season with flowing creeks. Jay was able to grab snow along the edges and push it into the 3 ditches that give us issues. Not pretty, but so much better! Sleds will have no issues getting through there. It’s just thin, like the rest of the city trails. We also hit the high school trail, widening it to where it should be.
All in all, these trails are poor. If we didn’t have to ride them earlier, we wouldn’t have, but we saw 23 sleds on our run so folks are still riding. You just have to know that they’re not good. Take it easy and know that you are riding on a very thin base, and some tree roots and other hazards may be exposed in places.
We did not go to the trailhead at Ashmun Bay on trail 8. There simply is not enough snow to make it worth it.
Wish I had better news for this part of our system, but we just didn’t get the snow needed to make them good. A bit of good news it that it is super cold, so any water spots on this part of our trails are long gone.
Sorry to be a downer, just being as honest as possible. This was easily the worst groom ever for us.
I’ll keep you posted! Pray, dance, sing or whatever it is you do for snow. We need it badly!❄️❄️❄️

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/21/25 Groomer Jay and I just finished the city trails. Aside from the car on trail 8 near Ashmun Bay, things look really good. We saw a little water on the trail to Kewadin as pictured, but that was honestly the worst part of the whole run. It was snowing hard for the last hour of our run. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well things held up after the warm up last week. We keep saying it, but we truly are very pleased with where things are this early seaon. Let’s hope it continues! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos... See MoreSee Less

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Here is our last call for ongoing system snow and lake effect snow from now through Sunday evening at 6 pm EST, December 20th & 21st, 2025. Uncertainty exists primarily in our trace-1" category which extends from Frankfort and Alpena south to I-96/I-69. The clipper moving through today may produce a quick squall of rain & snow with minimal accumulation some time beyond 1 pm EST, but models haven't determined if this band will solidify or not. If it does, the chance for a rain/snow mix exists in areas highlighted in the pink dashed box. This rain/snow mix would only be today. Any snow on Sunday will be lake effect off of Lake Superior, hence why our highest totals of 4-8" are located east of Munising over to Paradise. Not too impactful of a system in terms of Michigander standards, but do take it slow if you encounter any snow squalls and/or visibly slick roads. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea#gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskeyHere is our last call for ongoing system snow and lake effect snow from now through Sunday evening at 6 pm EST, December 20th & 21st, 2025.

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/20/25 Good morning all! Not any major changes here as of right now. We got maybe an inch of snow overnight in the Soo, with a bit in the forecast today and tomorrow. Our Raco crew has been out on 8 from Brimley west, and the 889 loop is being done now, as they have a bit more snow in that area. I haven’t spoken with the groomer bosses in the Soo or Kinross yet, but I would imagine we’ll still be on hold in those areas until we get a bit more snow. No doubt, we now have a very solid base over the majority of our trail system. We’ll keep you posted! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo ... See MoreSee Less

Still some thin areas on the grade and trail 3 north of town. Farther west and north snow level gets better. We have a good start to the season as all trails have been cleared and groomed a few times but we could really use more snow. We have plans to get back out grooming after Christmas and hopefully getting on a more consistent schedule weather permitting. ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Scott's Superior Inn and Cabins >> ❄️ Snowmobile Trail Update ❄️ We picked up 8–10 inches of fresh snow this weekend here in Ontonagon and it was just what the trails needed! This snowfall helped freshen things up and improve overall riding conditions across the area. It’s still early season riding, so expect some thinner spots, wet areas and changing conditions, but the good news is all trails are open and rideable — and there are even some really good stretches out there already. A big thank-you to the groomers and volunteers who have been putting in the time to make this happen. Ride smart, ride within your limits, and enjoy the fresh snow! 🛷❄️ #ontonagon #westernup#snowphotos❄️ Snowmobile Trail Update ❄️

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> Good afternoon, Sledheads: We got out to groom last night covering Trail 13 - Trail 101 - Trail 137 and Trail 12 from 101 to White Pine. We still have wet spots due to the recent warm-up last week, and have not yet been able to build ramps at the elevated driveways along Hwy 64 so ride with caution. Yesterday, Mac & Rick took down the "widowmaker" over Trail 1 in the woods just North of the junction of Trail 1 and Trail 102. The high winds keep blowing the fresh fluffy snow off Trail 1 along Lake Superior, so we are still not grooming that section. Mac will be out this afternoon grooming the road section of Trail 1 north of the ski hill to Lake of the Clouds. #ontonagon #westernup#snowphotosGood afternoon, Sledheads:

SIDNAW - WESTERN U.P. UPDATE via Sno Valley Riders Snowmobile Club >> Groomer Report: Trail Condition: Fair Last Groomed: December 19th, 2025 All of our trials are open and groomed. We would like the give a big THANK YOU to the DNR for helping us on trail 3 from Bruce Crossing to Rockland, they were insturmental in getting this trail open! It is still early season riding in many areas, watch out for wet spots and some thin snow areas. Overall I am calling our trails FAIR, there are some areas that are excellent and some that are not great but all are rideable. Please ride on the RIGHT side of the trail and STOP at the stop signs! Stay on the trail, if you don’t we could lose trail permissions on private property. Groomers have the right of way on the trails, pull over and stop to let them safely pass! We now have Groomer Tracker installed in our groomers. We groom every day that the weather conditions and equipment allow. Unforeseen circumstances may prevent us from going out, like a major blizzard and being snowed in at our homes or equipment breakdowns. #westernup... See MoreSee Less
