Gaylord Area Trail Report – 01/19
Gaylord Bureau –
January 19, 2024 – 8:56 a.m.
The snow we received last week and over the weekend gave our trails the boost they needed. Groomers have been out during the day and at night and trails are in good shape. We could use some moisture in the air to help pack the snow down to create a better base. There may still be areas where snow is drifting, but the groomers keep making their passes through all the trails. Check back for updates and trail conditions.
Please remember that groomers have the right of way and kindly move off the trail so they can safely proceed. If you approach a groomer from behind, the operator will signal when it’s safe for you to pass. Groomers are here to make your ride more enjoyable so please be courteous!

Yes I am the old guy behind the counter. Been standing there for 28 years and today is the start of my 67th year I winter along with my daughters 31st birthday too. She was my birthday present back in 1993. This place was alot better idea when I was 39, but still alot of fun and meeting all the people that read my ramblings here. I started doing this blog before that word was around. Long time reader Tom Parks was the one that first told me I was a blogger. So in any case it will be a fun day talking to everyone and its going to be a busy weekend as the most trailers I have seen between the 2 hotels in grayling this season. About 30 trailers between the two places. Sled traffic was steady all day on thursday. I saw the Grayling groomer going thru town this morning and that was a good sign but it wont take long for trails to get worn. Its a nice cold6 degrees this morning. Big John & Little Billie alond with Umberdog stopped by and they were heading for the bridge this morning. So please be safe out there and enjoy the snow while it lasts. Thanks for checking in. Pete

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> In the spirit of Christmas, here's today's forecast for December 23rd, 2025 that really doesn't feel much like the holiday season. Let's discuss!
Temperatures are slow-going to rise, then suddenly as we reach the afternoon hours, temperatures snap into the mid-40's for much of the state. Many locations close to the MI/OH border may surpass 50°F. Further north, mid-30's are likely. Sunshine will be noticeable out there today, as partly cloudy skies are the main icon. Winds will increase beyond noon as well, gusting between 20-30 mph for most, with some isolated spots in northeast Michigan, and along Lake Superior gusting 30-40 mph. Winds will be out of the west, and more details on the wind will be posted next. A light round of mixed precipitation is possible overnight into Wednesday for the Sault Ste. Marie region.

JORDAN VALLEY AREA UPDATE via Jordan Valley Trails Council >> Groomers ran north and south today, unfortunately neither operator had much good to report. The extended warm up from last week has taken a drastic toll on the trails. North of Elmira the trails were really thin today. The trails south of Alba are thin but flat and rideable as of now.
The rest of this week is expected to be cold but very little to no snow with high 30’s on Saturday. The end of next week is predicted to have high 30’s with some freezing rain.

FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE >> Its a quiet monday morning. I have seen 2 sleds go by but there was no new snow overnight.
Forcast is not favorable for later this week but I am sure there will be some sleds out and about as people
just do not want to wait. Hoping it will kick in but thats the best we can do. Its still nice and white out even though we lost alot of snow.

FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> A touch of new snow overnight but not enough to get excited about. Another day of slow sled traffic on saturday. I did count about 25 sleds across the street yesterday at the peak and I see a few over there now for breakfast. Still light snow in the air. I am certainly not thrilled with the forcast this coming week and it did make it up to 36 yesterday. The sleds that are out there are making the best of what we do have. For the first time in a few years Junior and the Obama Tour stopped by so it was good to visit with them. They are hoping for more riding this season too. The clipper moving through today may produce a quick squall of rain & snow with minimal accumulation some time beyond 1 pm EST, but models haven't determined if this band will solidify or not. If it does, the chance for a rain/snow mix exists in areas highlighted in the pink dashed box. This rain/snow mix would only be today. Any snow on Sunday will be lake effect off of Lake Superior, hence why our highest totals of 4-8" are located east of Munising over to Paradise.
