Gaylord Area Trail Report – 02/15
Gaylord Bureau –
February 14, 2024 – 12:04 p.m.
Temperatures have been warmer than usual this month, which has melted most of our snow. Trails are unrideable at this time and there is little snow expected in the extended forecast. We’ll keep you posted on any changes with the weather. Check back for updates and trail conditions.
Please remember that groomers have the right of way and kindly move off the trail so they can safely proceed. If you approach a groomer from behind, the operator will signal when it’s safe for you to pass. Groomers are here to make your ride more enjoyable so please be courteous!

Suprise, A little snow fell. Its about 9 a.m. thursday morning and about 2 inches of snow has fallen in Grayling and Frederic so far. Schools are closed but I cant believe they closed for what has happened so far. I have talked to several people this morning as I left town yesterday. Here are my thoughts. We need a heck of alot of snow to be able to ride. Yesterday as I was walking around the building I could see rock hard frozen sled tracks from 2 sleds that must have rode thru last week during the mud bog. There tracks stood out big as day. Thats what the ground is like underneath. I am going to stick with my feeling that we need alot more of system snow than lake effect snow. I know we have to start somewhere with new snow. WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Here is our last call for ongoing system snow and lake effect snow from now through Sunday evening at 6 pm EST, December 20th & 21st, 2025.
Uncertainty exists primarily in our trace-1" category which extends from Frankfort and Alpena south to I-96/I-69. The clipper moving through today may produce a quick squall of rain & snow with minimal accumulation some time beyond 1 pm EST, but models haven't determined if this band will solidify or not. If it does, the chance for a rain/snow mix exists in areas highlighted in the pink dashed box. This rain/snow mix would only be today. Any snow on Sunday will be lake effect off of Lake Superior, hence why our highest totals of 4-8" are located east of Munising over to Paradise. A snow squall. Maybe that’s what we had going on in Wakefield today. It was nuts!
FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> Still a decent amount of wind out there this morning but not as stiff as yesterday. I only saw about a dozen sleds on friday and I see a few over at the swamp this morning probably having the breakfast buffet. Last nite I went there for a mushroom and swiss burger and they had a band. To bad the place was pretty empty. We had about 1 inch of fluff overnight and I dont expect to see to many people today. I had the loader come last nite to move snow at both my storage lot and my parking lot behind Sledheads. It was so bad yesterday after the thaw I needed that big equipment to make it more tolerable. Still a decent amount of wind out there this morning but not as stiff as yesterday. I only saw about a dozen sleds on friday and I see a few over at the swamp this morning probably having the break… Are the trails good enough to ride still

Lake effect snows develop tonight, again most persistent in the snow belts north of the Mighty Mac. FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> We lost alot yesterday, made it to about 40 degrees, lots of slush and very dissapointing considering how good it was. Winds are stiff and when this slush hardens up from the cold its gonna make it really rough. So here I sit in Sledheads and it will be a great day for pushing slush and watching t.v. Stop by and say hi if you are in the area. I do still have my rental cottage avaiilable if you want to come and just camp out there for the winter. I wish I had a better report.
