Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 03/15

With temps in the 40’s all week it looks like this might be the last week of riding. The Gogebic Range Trail Authority reports grooming has stopped until further notice. Overall conditions are poor to fair and extremely icy. There will be a number of poor areas as the streets, highways and parking lots are bare.
Lake Gogebic area trail conditions are overall fair, but hard packed and icy in some areas. Groomers will be grooming when and where conditions allow. Trails south of the lake are in poor condition due to bare spots.
Watersmeet area trails are poor, but fair in the woods. Grooming has stopped and will not resume until weather permitting.

ABOUT THE ICE:
There is no such thing as "safe ice". If you choose to ride on a body of water, be sure you check with locals in the specific area you intend to ride and get current information on conditions in that area. When you ride on ice, you are doing so at your own risk.

Our 800# is still down so when calling you will not get a recording. Check back for updates and check out our webcams around the area at westernup.info ….

PHOTO REQUEST from us. If you have any neat snomo pictures you’re willing to share,we’re looking for a cover shot for next years map and other marketing uses. Can’t pay but will give a photo credit on inside of map. Send in jpg-300dpi-to bigsnow@westernup.info. Be aware anything you send will become the property of the WUPCVB so this request is more for amateur photographers…in other words, don’t send anything you may want to sell in the future. We appreciate any help on this.

Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 03/14

Looks like spring has come to the Keweenaw this week! Temps supposed to be in the 40s all week. Snowmobile trails range from poor and bare to still pretty good north of Phoenix. Looks like your last chance to play winter.

The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open, and groomers are out working on them. Trails are reported to range from bare to poor condition in towns, near the lake and in low snow areas to good condition in the woods. Trail 3 from Hancock to Lake Linden and Trail 122 from Lake Linden to Gay will not be groomed again until we get new snow.

Remember to watch out for the groomers when you’re out on the trails…….they have the right of way!!
There is logging on a short portion of Trail 133 between Gay and Lac La Belle.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.
