IRONWOOD / WESTERN U.P. UPDATE via Gogebic Range Trail Authority – ORV & Snowmobile Club – 01/29 Groomer Man Dan "Da Illinois Paver" finally broke free (From Boss Jerry!) to do some work on 11S. The section of 11S we are using this season is the "historical" route; this route was abandoned after club management (much before our time) decided to take two 30,000 # tractors back to back into a swamp in early December sinking both, then getting a dozer and an excavator stuck while trying to recover them. There were large trees, rocks and stumps we snaked around early this season and sent in Da IL-Paver to clear it out. He pushed the large rock out the way and cleared the large trees. We have taken this section from narrow with hazards to WIDE OPEN with limited or no hazards. The square holes in the swamp from the equipment remains today. We opened the trail this season thanks to sledders (that we asked to prerun it…) packing it down early season. Trail boss and VP sent club President Steve down it first with the Tucker to "see what happens". Great planning and timing saw the run successful and after Dan’s work widening the entire trail we are excited to have riders back on it. There remains logging on the north end (1.5 mi plowed, snow covered though!) and in the middle (about another 1mi section split in half by a reroute we did). Please yield to loggers! This is a wilderness trail – there’s nothing out there for miles along this route!
