St. Ignace Area Trail Report – 03/07

I am proud to report that all of the work has paid off and rewarded with trail conditions that are about the best we have seen all season! Driver and riders both are reporting that all of our trails are in good/very good/excellent condition. Only just a couple of rather partially bare spots on the RR Grade out of Iggy on the open areas persist. We totally lost the base in those spots, so we are going to need a decent amount more snow to get them going again. Otherwise, even the rest of the Grade is in good shape. In fact, most of the persistent rocks are gone too! The rest of the trails have between 4″ & 8″ of well packed base, with flat highway type conditions. Just a few corners have that ice base poking through bot overall you can’t complain about what we have. Toddmeister took some nice pics of the trails, so check out his post here: http://www.straitsareasnowmobileclub…ead.php?t=1145

The weather forecast for our area in 3 different spots is reporting a big storm on Wednesday – by far the biggest of the season. I guess we will see, but if we do get that 10″ they are predicting, then riding would not get any better period. Plan what could be the last great weekend of sledding.

Another busy weekend for me, and after the (same ‘ol same ‘ol) groomer show and then charity event on Saturday, I have to take the first plane to Mackinac Island on Sunday to work all day. Riding the island right now is good, everything is snow covered and smooth. Looking at the ice on the way back, if it stays cold, they may attempt to bring the ice bridge back again, as it is frozen all the way across again, with only a couple of water holes. 0-10d nights may give them another couple weeks of crossings.

While we were working downtown, firetrucks went out, which turned out to be a false alarm at Mission Point.

Gaylord Area Trail Report – Ray’s Retreat Country Inn – 03/06

Beautiful Afternoon spent on the trails for a 56 mile ride on very good trails. The surprise snow we got overnight Friday was packing snow which means it isn’t blowing off the trail.
Gaylord did not groom their trails. We cut thru wood/roads to get onto trail 679 where things improved dramatically. These trails were groomed, and so nice. Beautiful ride flying along, beautiful sunshine, very few riders. 679, to 79 all great riding. It was a really fun afternoon.
From 79 we caught trail 7 heading back catching lunch in Frederick. Then taking trail 7 north, along old 27 to the motel. Trail 7 up to Waters was not that bumpy considering it hadn’t been groomed. We were moving right along.
We had to slow down from Waters to home. This was a bit rough, with alot of open dirt showing.
A few icy spots in corners. Alot of excellent riding, and the rest very good until that last stretch.
Fingers are crossed that we get another heavy snow this week!
