Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 01/04

Greetings Sledders,

Quick update. We had a brief departure from Winter temps on Monday and Tuesday with a little rain and drizzle which did more good than harm. We can generally take, and welcome a mild thaw if it happens on the light traffic days the way this one did. The added moisture got the base soft and an Arctic blast is stiffening things up.

We are currently under a Winter storm warning until Thursday nooner-ish and the new snows are always a welcome sight after a weekend of heavy traffic and grooming.

I’m rating the trails as fair to good. The fair part has to do with the extreme southern and eastern parts of our trail system that don’t get as much LES and are a little snirtier than I’d like to see. Not that I like to see any snirt at all, well you know what I mean.

Please read, this could have been a real bad situation!!!!

There’s a blind hill just east of Jones Lake Rd. on the Lovells trail. The trail was carved out of this hill long before my time started here and that carving left a dirt wall on the east side of the hill with mature oaks on the west. I hate this hill because it’s not only blind for sledders, it’s blind to groomer drivers as well. I have no idea how fast he was going when he broke the top of the hill, instincts took over and I got the blade and front track out of his way but there was no room between the rear track and the dirt wall and he basically got wedged in. Somehow during the braking he stayed true enough to miss the edge of the blade, the side of the front track and the stairs to the cab and went deep enough that his handle bar cowling was behind the rear axle shaft. How he didn’t get hurt and no visible damage was done to the sled is beyond me. He learned a very valuable lesson.

We can be anywhere at any time. Please expect the unexpected and slow down on blind hills and corners.

Ride Often and Please Be Safe,
Keith, Sandy and The Girls

Paradise Area Trail Report – Paradise Area Night Riders – 01/04

January 4, 2017

20 degrees this morning and a stiff NW wind a blowing. Light snow falling and we have a 1000 footer parked out front which usually means more is a coming!!! We got about 3 fresh inches on my deck this morning too. We are still under a lake effect snow warning.

I`ve got more great news too…..our part for the broken groomer came in late yesterday afternoon!!!! We`ll be out working on that this morning and gettin` er back on the trail!!!! That`s if everything goes smooth. Its quite complicated puttin a fuel injector pump back in. Last time this happened we had to hire a mechanic to do it but we watched and helped so we think we can do it this time. Wish us luck!!

More good news…..Groomer Gerald is going to run the Falls trail #45 with a drag for the first time today. With this cold and snow he should be able to get it up to good shape. He`ll let me know tonight when he gets done and I`ll let ya`ll know tomorrow morning on my report. Not sure at this time what we are going to do with the other groomer. We will probably get into the south swamp tomorrow if everything goes smooth fixin the other groomer today.

If you`re thinking about coming UP this weekend….go for it!!! I think you`ll be happy you did. All I got for now but keep checking back.

LET ER SNOW!!!! Groomer Chris
