Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 01/06

This is the Keweenaw Snowmobile Trail System Report for Friday, January 6, 2017.

Snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open and in good condition.

The mat on the Portage Lift Bridge is down.

Trail 122 is closed for logging. You can still access the Dreamland trail from Lake Linden. Use Trail 124 to get to Gay.

Any trail usage should be done with extreme caution as there are wet spots, rocks, stumps, branches, and other hazards that have not been identified.

Please remember to watch out for the groomers when your’re out on the trails. They have the right away. Use caution around logging areas.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, drive safely. The signs on the trails are there for riders’ safety so please DO NOT remove or destroy them.

Snowfall in the Keweenaw Peninsula – 30 inches of snow on the ground, 131 inches fallen to date as of 1/6/17.

Today’s forecast: 90% chance of snow with 4-8 inches expected, high 10, low 5
Tomorrow: 90% chance of snow with 2-6 inches expected, high 8, low 4
Sunday: Cloudy with a 40% chance of snow, high 15, low 11
Monday: Partly cloudy with a 60% chance of snow, high 16, low 14
Tuesday: 80% chance of snow with 1-3 inches expected, high 28, low 16

Munising Area Trail Report – 01/05

TRAIL REPORT: 10:00 p.m. Thursday 1/5/17
Still Snowing on the North End with Trails Improving.

GROOMING OPERATIONS: Trails 8, 7 South to CR440 and 422 to Miners Castle Road groomed today.

TRAIL CONDITIONS: Good to Fair to Poor with base improvement. We do not have a deep frost yet with some soft spots and hidden holes in the wet areas of the hills, use extreme caution riding.

Trail 8 – Good its full length with a 5 to 6 inch base.
Trail 7 South – Good to Poor as you head South from Trail 8.
Trail 7 North – Still a few brown areas with rocky spots near Christmas.
Trail 419W (Munising-Christmas) – Poor, rocky and some water crossings.
Trail 419 (Wetmore-Munising) – To be re-opened soon, in preparation process with signage installation. Official opening will be announced.
Trail 419E (Wetmore-Trail 8) – Good
Trail 422 Miners Castle – Good to Fair with some soft spots.

WEATHER: Currently 4 degrees, Lake Effect Snow, 15-20 mph Winds.

CAUTIONS, WARNINGS and UPDATES:

CAUTION FOR TRAIL 419 & 422:
Standing and flowing water creating some hidden holes in areas of these trails. RIDE WITH CAUTION.

CAUTION FOR TRAIL419 (Munising Wetmore Connector) – currently does not exist between the Alger County Road Commission and Wetmore. MDOT Approval has been received and the trail is in preparation progress so watch for workers and groomers in the area. Official opening will be announced once signing is completed.
